목회의 은혜를 나누며 (9) - 리더가 행복한 교회를 꿈꾸며

 

볼티코어 교회의 리더 훈련은 분명한 목표를 가지고 있습니다. 그것은, 리더들이 먼저 행복한 소그룹을 경험하는 것입니다. 그리고 리더들의 행복과 좋은 관계가, 교회 전체에 선한 영향을 끼치게 하는 것입니다. 

모든 교회가 리더 교육의 중요성을 알고 있습니다. 그리고 단순히 구역 리더 분들을 모시고 리더십에 대해서 강의하는 것은 저에게 어려운 일이 아닙니다. 그러나 오랫동안 생각했던 것은, 리더십은 강의로만 배울 수 없다는 것입니다. 좋은 리더가 되기 위해서는 본인이 먼저 좋은 소그룹 안에서 서로를 알아가고 함께 은혜를 누리고 그 안에서 긍정적인 변화를 경험해야 합니다. 

그래서 저는 구역 예배를 준비하기 위해서 현장에서 강의하지 않습니다. 강의는 영상을 통해서 미리 준비해드리고 오히려 모임 당일에는 실제 소그룹에 초점을 맞춥니다. 저와 박동민 목사님, 그리고 제 아내를 통해서 함께 북클럽 셋팅을 만들고, 다음 달에 있을 구역 예배 교제로 실제로 소그룹 모임을 하면서 리더분들이 은혜를 누리도록 돕고 있습니다. 

사람들은 어떤 모임이든 나와 비슷한 연령대를 편하게 생각합니다. 실제로 동년배의 사람들과 대화하는 것이 즐겁고 도움이 됩니다. 그러나 영적인 관계를 맺어가다 보면 나와 다른 연령대의 분들과 모임을 하는 것 역시 매우 유익하고 감동이 된다는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 그것이 intergenerational 교육입니다. 그래서 의도적으로 다양한 연령대로 구성된 구역 리더분들과 북클럽 셋팅의 소그룹을 진행하고 있는 것입니다. 

저는 지난 주 리더 모임이 참 좋았습니다. 모든 리더 분들이 저보다 연장자이셨습니다. 그래서 참 좋았습니다. 어르신들이 자신의 삶 속에서 경험한 신앙의 고민과 결단을 듣는 것이 좋았습니다. 그리고 제가 만약 저 정도 나이가 들었을 때에 과연 저런 믿음으로 살아갈 수 있을 것인가를 생각했습니다. 어쩌면, 귀한 신앙의 선배님들이 걸어가신 길을 따라가는 것만으로도 저에게는 인생의 성공이라 생각했습니다. 

저에게 볼티모어 교회는 이제 시작에 불과합니다. 그러나 많은 부분들이 체계가 잡혔고, 특별히 리더 훈련의 부분에서 벌써 확고한 방향을 가지고 섬길 수 있어서 참으로 감사합니다. 그리고 가장 감사한 것은, 저와 리더들이 행복하다는 것입니다. 이것이 가장 중요한 것입니다. 만약에 리더들이 은혜를 받고 행복하다면, 당연히 구역원들을 더 잘 섬길 수 있을 것입니다. 본인이 리더 소그룹에서 먼저 경험한 칭찬, 격려, 권면, 사랑 등을 자신의 구역 모임 안에서 자연스럽게 실천할 수 있을 것입니다. 

볼티모어 교회 구역 리더 분들의 귀한 사랑 그리고 섬김에 감사드립니다. 앞으로도 신실한 믿음의 리더들을 통해서 볼티모어 교회가 더 행복한 교회로 나아갈 것을 믿습니다. 하나님께서 우리의 모든 걸음을 선하게 인도하실 것을 믿고 또한 기도합니다.  

The leader training at Baltimore Church has a clear goal: for leaders to first experience a joyful and thriving small group themselves. The happiness and strong relationships of these leaders will naturally have a positive impact on the entire church. 

Every church recognizes the importance of leader training. And while simply gathering district leaders and giving lectures on leadership is not a difficult task for me, I have long believed that leadership cannot be learned through lectures alone. To become a good leader, one must first experience a healthy and grace-filled small group—getting to know one another, sharing in God’s grace, and witnessing positive changes within themselves. 

Therefore, I do not conduct on-site lectures to prepare for district worship. Instead, I provide pre-recorded lectures through video and focus the actual meeting day on the small group experience itself. Together with Pastor Dongmin Park and my wife, we have established a book club setting, using next month’s district worship material to create real small group gatherings where leaders can personally experience spiritual enrichment. 

People naturally feel most comfortable with others of a similar age group. Conversations with peers are enjoyable and beneficial. However, as we build spiritual relationships, we come to realize that engaging with people of different age groups is also deeply meaningful and inspiring. This is the essence of intergenerational education. For this reason, we intentionally structure our district leader groups and book club small groups with diverse age ranges. 

Last week’s leader gathering was truly a blessing. All the leaders were older than me, and I found it to be a wonderful experience. Listening to their faith struggles and decisions throughout their lives was deeply moving. It made me reflect on whether I would be able to live with such faith when I reach their age. In a way, I believe that simply following the path of these great spiritual predecessors would already be a great success in life. 

For me, Baltimore Church is still in its early stages. However, many structures have already been established, and I am truly grateful that we have a clear and firm direction, especially in leader training. Above all, I am most thankful that both the leaders and I are experiencing joy in this process. This is the most important factor. When leaders receive grace and experience happiness, they will naturally serve their small groups better. The praise, encouragement, guidance, and love they first experience within their leader groups will naturally be practiced in their own district gatherings. 

I sincerely thank all the Baltimore Church district leaders for their love and dedication. I firmly believe that through the faithfulness of these committed leaders, Baltimore Church will continue to grow as a joyful and thriving church. I trust that God will lead every step we take and continue to pray for His guidance.

목회의 은혜를 나누며 (1) - 구역의 부흥이 시작되다

 

* 목회는 행복한 것이다

목회자로서 가장 행복한 순간은, 성도님들이 행복할 때입니다. 저 역시 한 사람의 성도로서 교회에 오면 즐겁고 행복하고 기쁨이 있고 다시 오고 싶은 그런 교회를 꿈꾸기 때문입니다. 성도님들의 행복이, 바로 저의 행복입니다. 

볼티모어 교회 온지 이제 세달 지났습니다. 50주년 기념 예배를 포함해서 중요한 예배들을 은혜 가운데 드릴 수 있었고, 예배의 분위기가 더 좋아졌다는 사실이 참으로 감사할 따름입니다. 저의 능력을 넘어서서 하나님께서는 은혜를 주셨고, 성도님들의 마음이 따뜻하게 녹아지고 있다는 것을 느낄 수 있어서 너무나 행복합니다. 

그러나 그럼에도 불구하고 제 마음 한켠에는 여전히 도전 의식이 있었습니다. 드려지는 예배들 가운데 은혜가 넘치는 것도 너무나 중요하며 그것만으로도 결코 쉬운 일은 아닙니다. 그러나, 결국에는 소그룹이 살아야만 교회가 부흥할 수 있기 때문에 제 마음 한켠에는 구역 모임에 대한 부담감이 크게 있었습니다. 

* 탁월한 소그룹을 꿈꾸며

만약에 우리의 목표가, 우리 교회도 소그룹이 있다라는 것 정도라면 어려운 일은 아닙니다. 조직을 만들고 리더를 세우고 모이라고 말씀드리면 충분하기 때문입니다. 그러나 만약에 우리의 목표가, 서로 간에 진정한 교제와 기쁨이 있고, 깊은 신앙의 이야기를 나누면서 서로가 하나되는 그런 소그룹을 원한다면 그것은 정말 어려운 일입니다. 어쩌면 거의 불가능에 가까운 일이라고 말할 수 있습니다. 

저의 마음에는, 크리스천 북클럽의 셋팅을 소그룹에 적용해야 한다라는 강한 확신이 있습니다. 북클럽 셋팅의 소그룹이야 말로 성경적인 모임이기 때문입니다. 지금까지 연구하고 실천한 모든 목회가 바로 그러한 훈련의 과정이었고, 그 부분에 있어서 자신이 있습니다. 그러나 볼티모어 교회에 실제로 그것을 소개하고 훈련하고 적용하는 것은 쉽지 않은 도전이었습니다. 

* 소그룹을 위한 준비가 필요하다

그래서 부임하자 마자 보이지 않는 준비와 노력들을 시작했습니다. 이미 함께 섬기는 목회자들과 북클럽을 훈련하면서 리더 양육을 시작했습니다. 설교 안에서는 중요한 책들을 인용하면서 책을 읽는다는 것 자체가 어색하지 은 정서로 교회를 바꾸려고 노력했습니다. 그리고 구역 리더 모임을 직접 인도하면서, 제가 추구하는 소그룹을 소개하고 실제로 워크샵까지 가졌습니다. 

그리고 드디어 오늘, 성도님들을 대상으로 하는 구역 오리엔테이션의 시간을 가졌습니다. 마음이 두근거렸습니다. 왜냐하면 이 모임의 가지는 중요성을 너무나 잘 알고 있었기 때문입니다. 볼티모어 교회가 부흥하기 위해서는, 구역 모임 소그룹이 반드시 부흥해야 하기 때문에 간절히 기도하면서 모임을 준비하였습니다. 

일반적으로 아무리 큰 교회라도 구역 모임에 참여하는 사람들의 퍼센트는 50퍼센트 정도입니다. 실제로 많은 사람들이 소그룹을 무시하고 그저 공예배를 참석하는 것 정도만 신앙 생활이라고 생각하기 때문입니다. 그런데 오늘 오리엔테이션에는 KM의 대부분이 성도님들이 함께 하셨습니다. 이것만으로도 제 마음은 벅찼습니다. 

* 구역 오리엔테이션

소그룹에 대한 강의를 하고, 아주 쉬운 수준의 크리스천 북클럽의 목표에 대해서 설명드렸습니다. 그리고 서로를 경청하는 것과 반응하는 것을 같이 훈련하고 또 앞으로 구역 예배의 방향에 대해서 말씀드렸습니다. 들으시는 성도님들의 표정을 보니 참 좋았습니다. 성도님들의 수준이 높다고 느껴졌습니다. 좋은 마음으로 강의를 들으시고 따라오면서 함께 반응하고 배워가는 과정이 너무 좋았습니다. 아래 링크를 통해서 제가 준비한 강의 자료를 확인하실 수 있습니다.

요즘에 저는, 하나님의 은혜를 경험합니다. 물론 이 모임은 목회자들과 리더들이 함께 준비한 것입니다. 그러나 우리의 준비를 넘어서 역사하시는 하나님의 풍성함을 경험합니다. 그래서 참 기뻤습니다. 하나님께서 교회에 역사하시고 기쁨과 행복을 부어주신다는 사실이, 그리고 성도님들의 밝은 얼굴을 볼 수 있다는 것이 참 좋았습니다. 

* 구역의 부흥이 시작되었다

저는 담임 목사로서, 하나님께서 볼티모어 교회에 부흥을 주시고 있다고 확신합니다. 그리고, 이제는 구역의 부흥이 이제 시작되었다고 확신합니다. 사실 모든 것은 이제 시작입니다. 아직 갈 길은 멉니다. 그러나 하나님께서 너무나 아름다운 첫발을 딛게 하셨고, 그래서 행복합니다. 

아름답게 모임을 인도하신 하나님께 영광을 올립니다. 그리고 다시 한번 목회적으로 마음을 다잡아 봅니다. 하나님께서 앞으로 구역 예배를 선하게 인도하시기를 기도합니다. 저의 역할에 최선을 다하겠습니다. 매달 한번씩 있을 구역 리더 모임을 잘 준비하고, 그 시간을 통해서 구역 리더 분들이 잘 준비되실 수 있도록 섬기겠습니다. 그리하여 볼티모어 교회가 그 어떤 교회와도 비교해도 전혀 부족하지 않은, 오히려 가장 감동적이고 기쁨이 넘치는 구역의 모임이 되도록 기도하며 이끌고 나가겠습니다.

* Pastoral Ministry Is Joyful

The happiest moments for me as a pastor are when the congregation is happy. This is because, as a member of the church myself, I dream of a church where people feel joy, happiness, and excitement, and where they want to return again and again. The happiness of the congregation is my happiness.

It has now been three months since I joined Baltimore Church. By God’s grace, we have been able to hold important worship services, including the 50th-anniversary celebration, and I am truly grateful for the improved atmosphere in worship. God has granted grace beyond my abilities, and I am so happy because I can feel that the hearts of the congregation are being warmly touched.

However, despite this, there has been a lingering sense of challenge in one corner of my heart. Overflowing grace in worship is undoubtedly crucial, and achieving that alone is not an easy task. But ultimately, for the church to truly thrive, small groups must also thrive, which is why I have felt a heavy burden regarding small group meetings.

* Dreaming of Outstanding Small Groups

If our goal was simply to say, "Our church has small groups," it would not be a difficult task. All it would take is creating a structure, appointing leaders, and instructing people to meet. However, if our goal is to have small groups where there is genuine fellowship, joy, and the sharing of deep spiritual stories, uniting members as one, then this is truly a challenging goal. It could even be said that it is almost impossible.

I have a strong conviction that the Christian Book Club setting must be applied to our small groups. This is because small groups modeled on the book club setting are, in my view, the most biblical type of gathering. All the ministry I have researched and practiced until now has been a training process for this, and I feel confident in this area. Yet introducing, training, and implementing this at Baltimore Church has been no small challenge.

* Preparation for Small Groups Is Necessary

From the moment I arrived, I began unseen preparations and efforts. I started training leaders by conducting book clubs with my fellow pastors. Through my sermons, I quoted important books, attempting to foster a culture where reading is not unfamiliar or awkward. Additionally, I directly led small group leader meetings, introducing the type of small groups I envision and even conducting workshops.

Finally, today, we held an orientation session for the congregation regarding small groups. My heart was pounding because I understood the significance of this gathering so well. For Baltimore Church to thrive, small group meetings must thrive. I prepared for this meeting with earnest prayer.

Typically, even in large churches, only about 50% of members participate in small group meetings. Many people see simply attending Sunday worship as sufficient for their faith. But today, most of the KM members of our church attended the orientation. This alone filled my heart with gratitude.

* Small Group Orientation

I gave a lecture on small groups and explained the simple goals of a Christian Book Club. We also practiced listening to and responding to one another and discussed the future direction of small group worship. Looking at the expressions of the congregation, I felt great. I could sense their high level of spiritual maturity. It was wonderful to see them engage with the lecture in good spirits, follow along, and participate in the learning process together. These days, I am experiencing God’s grace. Of course, this meeting was prepared by the pastors and leaders together. But I also felt God’s abundant work beyond our preparations. This brought me great joy. It was so good to see how God is working in the church, pouring out joy and happiness, and to witness the bright faces of the congregation.

* The Revival of Small Groups Has Begun

As the senior pastor, I am confident that God is bringing revival to Baltimore Church. I also firmly believe that the revival of small groups has now begun. Of course, this is only the beginning. There is still a long road ahead. But God has allowed us to take such a beautiful first step, and for that, I am happy.

I give glory to God for leading this beautiful gathering. Once again, I refocus my pastoral heart. I pray that God will continue to guide the small group meetings in a good way. I will do my best in my role. I will prepare well for the monthly small group leader meetings, ensuring that the leaders are well-equipped during those times. I pray and will work towards making Baltimore Church's small group meetings so inspirational and joy-filled that they can stand out among any other churches.
