A pastor’s greatest desire is to see the church flourish—not in a worldly sense, but in being firmly established in God’s will, overflowing with His grace and comfort. However, opening the hearts of congregants and inspiring a life of service is a profound challenge that requires both God’s intervention and practical methods.
Following last year’s successful study of David Platt’s Something Needs to Change, we chose Philip Yancey’s What’s So Amazing About Grace? for our second season. Despite the bittersweet news regarding the author's health, we proceeded with prayerful conviction.
This book is profound. God’s grace runs counter to our sinful nature, yet it sparks an incredibly powerful response. Across four groups and eleven sessions, both the congregants and I invested significant spiritual and emotional energy into this journey.
The results were beyond words. Experience has shown that moving through even two books in a communal setting triggers remarkable change. This year, the depth of our maturity grew even further. God cultivated within us a renewed awe for the Gospel and a fervent desire to extend His grace to others. For a pastor, there is no greater joy.
Through this process, I witnessed the true power of a Christian book club. It is a blessing to serve in a ministry that is both deeply biblical and practical. While leading every session amidst a busy schedule was demanding, the fruit God produced made every effort feel small in comparison.
I am deeply grateful for the time spent with our beloved members and for the lessons of forgiveness and grace I personally rediscovered. All glory belongs to God, who continues to lead Baltimore Church with His goodness.
