저는 제가 행복한 담임 목사라고 생각합니다. 왜냐하면 좋은 분들과 함께 목회를 하고 있기 때문입니다. 목회는 혼자 하는 것이 아니라 모든 분들과 함께 하는 것입니다.
KM에서 함께 섬기는 박동민 목사님은, 한국의 한동대 워십팀에서 훈련을 받은 분입니다. 인도자로서 열정과 감각 그리고 실력을 겸비한 분입니다. 오랫동안 볼티모어 교회의 힐링 프라이데이를 성실하게 섬겨 오셨습니다. 거기다가 성경 자매와 노집사님께서 함께 찬양을 하니 너무나 아름다운 하모니가 흘러나옵니다. 반주로 탁월하게 섬기는 제 아내에게는 언제나 감사한 마음입니다.
저는 매주 금요일을 참 좋아합니다. 제가 가끔 직접 인도하기는 하지만, 회중석에 앉아서 함께 기도하고 찬양하는 시간이 너무 좋기 때문입니다.
저는 전통적인 예배도 너무 좋아하지만, 현대적인 예배도 정말 좋아합니다. 그래서 매주 금요일이 기다려집니다. 또 한편으로는 행복한 고민입니다. 토요일 새벽 예배도 정말 좋기 때문입니다. 요즘에 토요일 새벽은 거의 잔치 분위기입니다. 예배 후에 식사 교제까지 있습니다. 제가 부탁드린 것도 아닌데 성도님들이 자발적으로 섬기시기 시작하셨습니다. 저도 덩달아 신이 났습니다.
저는 이민 교회 성도님들의 어려움을 늘 생각합니다. 그리고 성도님들의 상황이 모두 다르기 때문에, 억지로 어떤 예배를 강요하지는 않습니다. 다만, 성도님들께서 자신에게 맞는 예배를 더 열정적으로 참여하시기를 바라는 마음입니다. 만약, 찬양으로 깊이 들어가고 함께 기도하는 열정적인 예배를 원하신다면, 힐링 프라이데이에 당신을 초대합니다. 풍성한 은혜와 새로운 영적인 도약을 하나님께서 허락하실 것을 확신합니다.
I consider myself a happy senior pastor because I am doing ministry together with wonderful people. Ministry is not something done alone but with everyone together.
Pastor Park, who serves in KM with me, was trained with the Handong University worship team in Korea. He is a leader with passion, sensitivity, and skill. For a long time, he has faithfully served Baltimore Church’s Healing Friday. On top of that, when Sister Seongkyung and Decon Noh join in praise, such a beautiful harmony flows out. I am always thankful to my wife, who serves so excellently as an accompanist.
I really love every Friday. Though I sometimes lead directly, I especially enjoy sitting in the congregation, praying and singing together.
I love traditional worship, but I also truly love contemporary worship. That’s why I look forward to every Friday. On the other hand, it’s a happy dilemma because Saturday dawn worship is also so wonderful. Recently, Saturdays have almost felt like a feast. After the service, we even share a meal together. I never asked anyone, but the members voluntarily began serving in this way. It excites me as well.
I always think about the difficulties immigrant church members face. Because everyone’s situations are different, I never try to force a certain style of worship. However, I do hope that members will join more passionately in the form of worship that fits them best. If you desire a passionate worship with deep praise and prayer together, I invite you to Healing Friday. I am confident that God will grant abundant grace and a new spiritual leap forward.
저의 어린 시절을 돌이켜 보면, 교회에서 지내던 모든 순간들이 행복했습니다. 본당의 의자들 사이를 이리저리 뛰어다니고, 친구들과 어울려서 놀다보면 하루가 금방 지나갔습니다.
요즘에 저희 교회 아이들을 보면 마치 저의 어린 시절을 보는 것 같습니다. 아무런 걱정 없이 마냥 행복하게, 교회를 제집처럼 여기고 노는 모습 속에서 아이들의 기쁨을 봅니다. 귀한 영혼들을 보면서 마음이 벅찹니다. 저 역시 다시 어린 아이가 됩니다. 그 시절의 순수한 마음으로 돌아갑니다.
이번에 VBS를 보면서 마치 축제를 보는 것 처럼 느껴졌습니다. 인사 나누는 모든 분들의 얼굴에 행복이 깃들어 있었습니다. 무려 일주일 동안 일어나는 이 귀한 사역 가운데, 볼티모어 교회의 어린이들 뿐 아니라 지역의 어린이들도 함께 하며 말씀을 배우고 즐겁고 행복한 시간을 가졌습니다. 말씀과 찬양과 또 즐거운 시간이 어우러진 정말 좋은 VBS 였습니다.
이렇게 큰 규모의 행사로 섬기는 것은 절대로 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 어린이 부서를 맡고 계시는 김미아 간사님과 EM을 총괄하시는 나현수 목사님께서 수고를 많이 하셨습니다. 청소년들은 스탭들로 함께 도우면서 자신들의 모든 역할을 잘 감당해 주었습니다. 아이들의 부모님들, KM의 장로님들 그리고 권사님들께서도 마음을 많이 써 주시고 기도로 후원과 봉사로 애를 쓰셨습니다.
볼티모어 교회는 역사가 깊은 교회입니다. 또한 동시에 다음 세대를 생각하며 힘을 다해 그들을 키우는 교회입니다. 공동의 기도 시간에 거의 빠지지 않는 것이 다음 세대를 위한 기도입니다. 교회의 귀한 걸음들을 이끄시고 친히 다음 세대를 키우시는 하나님을 찬양합니다. 볼티모어 교회의 비전이 그러한 것처럼, 앞으로도 모든 세대가 함께 예배하는 아름다운 교회가 되기를 원합니다. 믿음의 유산이 계속 이어져 이 시대를 밝히는 담대한 교회 되기를 원합니다.
When I look back on my childhood, every moment I spent at church was filled with joy. Running back and forth between the pews in the sanctuary and playing with friends made the day pass in no time.
These days, when I see the children at our church, it feels as if I am seeing my younger self. I see their joy in the way they play freely and happily, treating the church like their own home, with no worries at all. Seeing these precious souls fills my heart, and I, too, become like a child again—returning to the pure heart of those days.
Watching this year’s VBS felt like witnessing a festival. The faces of everyone greeting one another were full of happiness. Throughout this precious ministry, which lasted an entire week, not only the children of Baltimore Church but also children from the local community joined together to learn God’s Word and enjoy a joyful and blessed time. It was a truly wonderful VBS, where the Word, praise, and fun blended together beautifully.
Serving such a large-scale event is by no means easy. Director Miah Kim, who leads the Children’s Ministry, and Pastor Mike Ra, who oversees the EM, worked tirelessly. The youth served faithfully as staff, carrying out all their responsibilities well. Parents, as well as the elders and deaconesses of the KM, also poured out their hearts—praying, supporting, and serving with dedication.
Baltimore Church is a church with a rich history, yet it is also one that wholeheartedly invests in raising the next generation. One of the most consistent prayer topics in our corporate prayer gatherings is for the next generation. We praise God, who leads these precious steps of our church and personally nurtures the next generation. Just as this is the vision of Baltimore Church, we pray that it will continue to be a beautiful church where all generations worship together, and that the legacy of faith will endure—shining boldly as a church that lights up this generation.
교회는 하나님께서 성령 하나님을 통해서 하나되게 하신 공동체입니다. 그래서 우리는 타인이 아니라 가족입니다. 그러나 그 하나됨을 실제로 누리는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 잠깐 예배로 모였다가 흩어지는 것은 항상 아쉬움이 있습니다.
그래서 저는 볼티모어교회가 더 귀하다고 느껴집니다. 우리 교회는 장점이 많지만 특히 그 중에 가장 큰 장점은, 성도님들의 마음이 하나가 되어 있다는 것입니다. 그래서 교회에 중요한 일들이 있고 함께 힘을 모아야 할 때면 모든 성도님들이 자신의 일처럼 나섭니다.
두달 전에 봄을 맞이하여서 교회를 아름답게 가꾸기 위해서 온 성도님들이 팔을 걷어 붙였습니다. 어린 아이들부터 어르신들까지 함께 꽃 모종을 심고 물을 주었습니다. 저도 오랜만에 삽을 들었습니다. 열심히 흙을 파고 나르고 태어나서 처음으로 꽃을 심었습니다.
그리고 이제 꽃이 활짝 피었습니다. 그 몇달 동안에도 성도님들이 많은 관심과 사랑을 쏟았습니다. 잡초도 뽑고 물을 주었습니다. 그리고 이제 더 아름다워진 교회를 보니 제 마음도 벅찹니다. 단지 꽃을 바라 보았을 뿐인데, 함께 수고하고 헌신하는 성도님들의 모습이 겹쳐 보여 더 마음이 푸근합니다. 볼티모어의 귀한 성도님들은, 활짝 핀 꽃보다 더 아름다운 분들입니다.
저의 바램은, 꽃보다 귀한 성도님들이 행복한 것입니다. 교회가 행복했으면 좋겠고 또 따뜻했으면 좋겠습니다. 지금도 그런 교회이고 앞으로 더 그럴 것이라고 확신합니다. 아름다운 교회로 세워가시는 하나님을 찬양합니다.
The church is a community that God has united through the Holy Spirit. That is why we are not strangers but family. However, it is not easy to truly enjoy this unity. There is always a sense of longing when we gather briefly for worship and then go our separate ways.
That is why I find Baltimore Church even more precious. Our church has many strengths, but the greatest among them is that the hearts of our members are united. Whenever something important arises and we need to work together, every member steps up as if it were their own responsibility.
Two months ago, as spring arrived, all our members rolled up their sleeves to beautify the church. From young children to our elders, everyone joined in planting flower seedlings and watering them. I picked up a shovel for the first time in a while. I worked hard digging and carrying soil, and for the first time in my life, I planted flowers.
Now the flowers are in full bloom. Throughout the past few months, our members have shown much care and love. They pulled weeds and watered the plants. Now, seeing how beautiful the church has become, my heart is overwhelmed. Just by looking at the flowers, I am reminded of our members who served with such dedication, and it fills my heart with warmth. The precious members of Baltimore Church are more beautiful than the blooming flowers.
My hope is that these precious members, more valuable than flowers, would be truly happy. I hope our church will continue to be joyful and warm. It already is, and I believe it will become even more so. I praise God who is building this beautiful church.
좋은 교회는 어떤 교회일까요? 사람마다 생각이 다르겠지만, 저는 본질을 소중히 여기고 집중하는 교회가 좋은 교회라고 생각합니다. 그리고 교회의 본질은 하나님의 말씀입니다. 성도의 정체성 자체가 말씀 위에 서 있습니다. 우리는 진리의 말씀을 통해서 거듭났고, 말씀을 통해서 자라갑니다. 그리고 말씀대로, 언젠가 영원한 주님의 품에 안길 것입니다.
물론, 모두가 말씀이 중심이 되는 교회를 꿈꿉니다. 그러나 막상 그것을 실현하는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 단순히 좋은 설교만 있어서 되는 일은 아닙니다. 설교는 매우 중요하지만, 그러나 그 설교를 자신의 마음과 삶에 품어내기 위해서는 결국 스스로 말씀을 이해하고 받아들이는 능력이 필요합니다. 다시 말해, 성도 한 사람의 각자의 말씀에 대한 갈망과 성숙함이 필요한 것입니다.
* 양육의 두가지 축
저는 교회 양육의 두가지 축을, 북클럽과 말씀 묵상으로 잡았습니다. 일반적으로 하는 제자 훈련, 성경 개관 등의 훈련 프로그램도 필요하지만, 이 두가지가 가장 성도님들을 가장 빠르고 효과적으로 자라게 합니다.
두가지는 서로 보완하는 효과가 있습니다. 사실 책이라는 것은 복합적인 말씀 묵상과 해석의 결과 입니다. 다시 말해서, 북클럽을 통해서 성경을 이해하는 수준이 깊어지고, 성경적 사고의 폭이 넓어집니다. 그리고 성경 묵상은, 이러한 성경적인 사고를 가능하게 하는 가장 중요한 성경 자체를 공부하는 것입니다. 성경 안으로 깊이 들어가 진리를 이해하고, 해석하고, 그리고 그것을 나와 연결 짓는 것이 바로 성경 묵상입니다.
'복음이 울다'를 통해서 이미 은혜의 샘터 북클럽 1기를 잘 마쳤습니다. 서른 분의 성도님들과 함께 일주일에 네 클래스를 통해서 너무나 의미있는 시간을 가졌습니다. 모임 순간 순간이 큰 은혜가 있었고, 성도님들 각자와 제 자신을 성장시킬 수 있는 참으로 귀한 시간이었습니다.
* 큐티 클래스를 시작하며
그리고 이제 큐티 클래스를 시작합니다. 제 마음이 너무 행복한 것은, 다시 한번 본질에 집중할 수 있기 때문입니다. 많은 사람들이 성장하고 싶어하지만, 그런 성장의 기회를 실제로 경험하기는 쉽지 않습니다. 하지만 성도님들과 소그룹으로 만나고, 그분들의 성경에 대한 이해와 고백을 들으며, 필요한 부분들을 채워드릴 수 있기에 이 시간은 목회적으로 너무나 중요한 시간입니다.
큐티는 아주 쉽기도 하고 어렵기도 합니다. 사실 설교의 시작은 철저한 큐티에서 시작됩니다. 그런 면에서 큐티를 깊게 하기 위해서는 많은 시간과 노력을 필요로 합니다. 하지만 한편으로는 큐티는 참으로 쉬운 것입니다. 말씀을 읽고 의미를 생각하면 됩니다. 그리고 그것을 나에게 비추어 보고 결단하고 기도하면 됩니다.
큐티에 대한 여러 전문적인 조언들이 있지만, 저는 볼티모어 교회에서 하는 큐티는 최대한 쉽게 진행하려고 합니다. 누구나 할 수 있는 수준에서 모임을 진행할 예정입니다. 물론, 성도님들의 필요를 살펴 더 발전하고자 하는 분들은 거기에 맞춰 따로 섬길 것입니다. 하지만 분명한 방향은, 누구나 쉽게 큐티를 하는 것입니다. 그래서 큐티를 위한 쉬운 가이드를 준비했습니다.
실제로 모임을 인도하는 형식은, 살짝 북클럽 형식을 가미할 예정입니다. 묵상할 본문만 드리지 않고, 중요한 스터디 바이블에서 발췌해서 읽을 내용을 같이 드리려고 합니다. 그리고 발표한 이후에 서로가 피드백하고 칭찬하고 격려하면서, 말씀에 대한 이해와 적용을 풍성하게 만들어갈 예정입니다. 아래 샘플을 통해서 제가 추구하는 큐티 모임 형식을 살펴보실 수 있습니다.
* 말씀이 다스리는 교회를 꿈꾸며
결국 가장 중요한 것은, 스스로 말씀을 가까이하는 습관과 능력을 기르는 것입니다. 저를 포함해서 누구나 처음은 어색하고 낯설고 부족합니다. 그러나 그것이 끊임없이 이어지고 발전하면 언젠가는 누구도 넘볼 수 없는 수준의 경지에 도달하는 것입니다.
저는 목회자로서, 저와 함께하시는 성도님들이 모두 성장하기를 원합니다. 어쩌면 그것이 목회자가 바라는 전부입니다. 성도님들 모두가 말씀을 가까이하는 것을 즐거워하고, 말씀을 묵상하면서 마음이 뜨거워지고, 자신의 삶이 실제로 바뀌고, 이러한 영적인 분위기가 교회 전체를 휩쓸고 지배하기를 원합니다. 그리고 이 모든 과정 속에서 오직 하나님께서 역사하시고, 볼티모어 교회를 더욱 아름다운 주님이 기뻐하시는 교회로 세워가시기를 기도합니다.
* A Good Church
What makes a church a good church? People may have different opinions, but I believe a good church is one that values and focuses on the essence. And the essence of the church is the Word of God. The identity of believers is founded on the Word. We were born again through the Word of truth, and we grow through the Word. Someday, according to the Word, we will be embraced in the eternal arms of the Lord.
Of course, everyone dreams of a church where the Word is central. However, putting that into practice is not easy. It's not enough to just have good preaching. Preaching is very important, but in order for that message to take root in one’s heart and life, each person must have the ability to understand and accept the Word personally. In other words, each believer needs a personal hunger for the Word and spiritual maturity.
* The Two Pillars of Discipleship
I’ve chosen two pillars for discipleship at church: the book club and daily devotion (QT). Programs like traditional discipleship training or Bible overview classes are also important, but I believe these two methods help believers grow most effectively and quickly.
The two complement each other. A book, after all, is a result of deep meditation on and interpretation of Scripture. In other words, through the book club, one's understanding of the Bible deepens, and the scope of biblical thinking broadens. Meanwhile, QT helps us study the Bible itself, which makes biblical thinking possible. Through QT, we dive deeper into Scripture, understand the truth, interpret it, and connect it to our lives.
We already finished the first session of the “Spring of Grace Book Club” using The Gospel Makes Us Cry. With thirty church members and four classes a week, we had such a meaningful time. Every meeting was filled with grace, and it was a precious time that helped both the members and me grow.
* Starting the QT Class
Now, we are beginning the QT class. I’m so joyful because it allows us to focus again on the essence. Many people want to grow, but not everyone experiences real growth. However, by meeting with church members in small groups, hearing their insights and confessions about Scripture, and helping them in areas of need, this time becomes incredibly meaningful for pastoral ministry.
QT can feel both simple and difficult. In fact, every sermon begins with deep QT. In that sense, real QT takes much time and effort. But on the other hand, QT is very simple. Just read the Word, think about its meaning, reflect on yourself, make a resolution, and pray.
Though there are many professional methods of QT, I plan to keep our QT at Baltimore Church as simple as possible. The goal is for everyone to be able to join. Of course, for those who want to go deeper, we’ll provide further guidance. But our clear direction is to make QT easy for everyone. That’s why I’ve prepared a simple guide.
Our meeting format will include elements of the book club. Instead of simply handing out the meditation passage, I’ll also share selected readings from a study Bible. After sharing, we’ll give feedback, encourage each other, and deepen our understanding and application of God’s Word. You can see the sample below to get a sense of how the QT group will be led.
* Dreaming of a Church Ruled by the Word
In the end, the most important thing is developing the habit and ability to stay close to the Word. For all of us—including myself—the beginning may feel awkward and unfamiliar. But if this continues and grows, it will eventually reach a level no one can take lightly.
As a pastor, I truly desire that all members grow. Perhaps that is the one thing every pastor longs for. I hope that all of you will enjoy being close to the Word, feel your hearts burn while meditating on Scripture, and experience real transformation in your lives. I hope that this spiritual atmosphere will sweep across the entire church.
And in all of this process, I pray that God alone will work and continue to build Baltimore Church into a more beautiful church that brings joy to the Lord.
요즘에 뉴스를 보면 특히 투자에 대한 이야기가 많습니다. 어디에 주식을 투자해야 한다더라, 어느 회사가 더 전망이 좋다더라, 경제적인 문제는 중요한 것이기 때문에 누구나 깊은 관심을 가지고 있습니다.
그렇다면 영적인 투자는 어떤가요? 많은 성도님들이 교회에서의 시간을 낭비라고 받아들입니다. 혹시 소그룹 모임을 참여하더라도, 나에게 어떤 것이 남는다기 보다는 소모된다는 느낌이 크기 때문입니다. 내가 마음 껏 이야기하고 의미 있는 시간을 가졌다는 생각보다는, 그저 리더가 하는 이야기를 듣기만 하는 지루한 시간인 경우가 많기 때문입니다.
그러나 지난 20년을 성도님들과 북클럽을 하면서, 저는 북클럽이야 말로 성도님들과 제 자신을 위한 최고의 영적 투자라고 생각했습니다. 그리고 담임 목사로서 섬기면서 지금 가지고 있는 확신도 바로 그것입니다.
제가 이해할 때 크리스천 북클럽은 가장 성경적인 소그룹입니다. 성경적으로 어떻게 생각해야 하는지 힘을 길러줍니다. 서로가 서로에게 의지하고 격려하는 구조를 만들어 가족의 하나됨을 만들어 냅니다. 피드백을 바탕으로 한 깊은 대화를 통해서 한 사람의 세계관을 변화시키고 그 영향력을 확대시켜서 교회 전체를 더욱 복음적으로 만듭니다. 그러므로 크리스천 북클럽이야 말로 '최고의 영적 투자'입니다.
처음에 몇 클래스나 열어야 하는가 고민하다가, 하나님께서 이런 마음을 주셨습니다. "교회가 필요한 만큼 네가 맞추어라." 현재 볼티모어교회는, 수요일 오전, 목요일 저녁, 토요일 오전, 주일 오후 이렇게 네번의 클래스를 진행 중입니다.
담임 목사로서 일주일에 네 클래스를 여는 것은 실상 큰 도전이었습니다. 여러편의 설교와 심방과 행정적인 모든 것들을 섬기면서 동시에 양육 프로그램을 이렇게 진행하는 것은, 지금까지의 제 한계를 뛰어 넘어서 스스로를 훨씬 더 효율적으로 만들어야만 가능한 것입니다.
큰 기대 가운데, 그리고 제 자신을 넘어서고자 하는 몸부림 가운데 은샘 북클럽(은혜의 샘터) 1기가 마지막을 향해서 진행 중입니다. 이미 모임 중에 많은 은혜가 있었습니다. 모임이 즐겁기 때문에 한번의 모임이 최소 두시간이지만 불평하는 분이 없습니다.
저도 많이 눈물을 흘렸고, 또 성도님들도 눈물을 흘렸습니다. 모임을 통해서 성도님들이 복음 안에서 자라가는 것을 보는 것이 참 좋습니다. 피상적인 짧은 심방으로는 누릴 수 없는 깊은 대화들을 나눌 수 있어서 참 좋습니다. 믿음의 용사와 같은 서른 분이 신뢰가 가고, 이분들을 통해서 볼티모어 교회의 바뀌는 영적인 분위기가 보여서 그것이 저의 마음에 너무나 큰 기쁨이 됩니다.
하나님께서 저에게 주신 비전은, 이 모든 과정을 통해서 교회가 아름답게 서는 것입니다. 하나님이 기뻐하시는 견고한 예수 그리스도의 몸된 공동체로, 그리고 그 안에서 서로의 마음이 그리스도의 사랑으로 가득해져서 삶 가운데 빛과 소금의 역할을 능히 감당하게 하는 것입니다.
많이 피곤하지만, 그것보다 훨씬 더 큰 기쁨이 있습니다. 저의 삶의 편안함 보다 더 중요한 것은, 과연 저의 목회자 하나님이 기뻐하시는 방향으로 가고 있는가이고, 또한 성도님들의 마음에 은혜과 감격과 기쁨이 있는가 입니다. 볼티모어 교회 가운데 하나님께서 지속적으로 은혜와 지혜를 부으시기를, 그리고 오직 주님의 뜻을 충실하게 이루는 아름다운 목회가 되기를 원하고 또 간절히 기도합니다.
These days, the news talks a lot about investment. People want to know which stocks to buy, or which company has a good future. Because financial matters are important, everyone pays close attention.
But what about spiritual investment? Many church members think that spending time at church is not productive. Even if they join a small group, they often feel tired rather than refreshed. It’s because they don’t feel like they can share freely or have meaningful conversations. Instead, they just listen to the leader, and it can feel boring.
However, after leading Christian book clubs with church members for 20 years, I truly believe that the book club is the best spiritual investment—for them and for me. And now, as the senior pastor, I believe this even more.
In my understanding, a Christian book club is the most biblical kind of small group. It helps us think in a biblical way. It builds a supportive and encouraging environment, like a family. Through deep conversations and feedback, one person’s worldview can be changed, and that change can impact the whole church to be more gospel-centered. That’s why I say a Christian book club is the best spiritual investment.
At first, I wasn’t sure how many classes to open. But God gave me this thought: “Start as many as your church needs.” So now at Baltimore Church, we have four classes: Wednesday morning, Thursday evening, Saturday morning, and Sunday afternoon.
As a senior pastor, leading four book club classes a week is a big challenge. I also have to prepare sermons, visit members, and take care of many administrative tasks. To do all of this, I had to grow and manage my time more effectively than ever.
With great expectation, I’m now leading the first term of “EunSaem Book Club” (Grace Spring). We are near the end. God has already given us many blessings through the meetings. Each session is at least two hours long, but no one complains because the time is so enjoyable.
I cried many times. Our members cried too. It’s so beautiful to see them growing in the gospel. These deep conversations are something I can’t have during short visits. I trust the 30 members of this group—they are like warriors of faith. Through them, I can see the spiritual atmosphere of Baltimore Church changing, and this brings me great joy.
The vision God gave me is to build a healthy, beautiful church. A strong body of Christ that God delights in. A community where our hearts are filled with Christ’s love, and where we live as the salt and light of the world.
Even though I’m often tired, the joy is far greater. What matters more than my comfort is whether my ministry is going in the direction that pleases God, and whether our members are experiencing grace, joy, and gratitude. I sincerely pray that God will continue to pour His grace and wisdom on Baltimore Church and that our ministry will faithfully fulfill His will.
볼티모어교회는 참 좋은 교회입니다. 그 이유는, 끊임없이 교회의 본질을 붙들고 그것을 향해서 추구해 나가고 있기 때문입니다. 그리고 성도님들 모두가 이러한 성경적 교회를 꿈꾸고 있다는 점에서 언제나 감사한 마음입니다.
담임 목사로서 처음 맞이하는 선교의 달, 그리고 선교 부흥회는 의미가 컸습니다. 교회의 영적인 분위기에 저도 동참하면서, 한달동안 집중적으로 복음 전파에 대해서 함께 고민하고 말씀을 나눌 수 있었기 때문입니다. 특별히 휄로십 교회의 김대영 목사님을 모시고 부흥회의 귀한 시간을 가질 수 있어서 참으로 감사했습니다.
김목사님의 세번의 말씀을 들으면서 마음이 뜨거워지는 것을 느꼈습니다. 선교사로 헌신하시고 열정적으로 섬기신 시간들, 그리고 주님께서 목사님의 생명을 구하시고 계속적으로 복음으로 교회를 섬기게 하시는 모든 간증이 참 좋았습니다. 그리고 성도들의 인생의 목적에 대해서 "예수님을 듣지 못한 수 많은 사람들을, 하나님과 화목하게 하는 일" 이라고 분명하게 정의해 주신 부분이 참 좋았습니다.
그리고 하나님께 드리는 사람이 되어야 한다라는 강력한 선포가 좋았습니다. 김대영 목사님과 조금만 대화를 해보아도, 얼마나 하나님께 헌신된 분인지를 알 수가 있었습니다. 마음으로 부터 느껴지는 목사님의 진심으로 참 좋았고, 그러한 진실함이 설교 가운데 묻어 나왔습니다. 많은 사람들이 자신의 합리성을 붙들고 살아가지만, 그러나 결국에는 하나님을 신뢰하고 그분을 믿음으로 자신의 생각을 뛰어 넘어 온전히 하나님께 드리는 사람이 되라고 강조하신 것은, 목사님의 지나온 진실한 삶과 겹치는 능력 있는 말씀의 선포였습니다.
결정적으로 도전이 된 것은, "우리 모두가 선교사이다" 라는 선언이었습니다. 일상에 눌려서 살아가는 이민 교회 성도들을 향하여서, 선교는 특정한 사람에게만 주어진 사명이 아니라, 성도 모두에게 주어진 것임을 알려주시기 위해서 우리 모두가 선교사라고 강조하셨습니다. 이러한 사명의 선언을 통해서 성도님들도 마음에 은혜를 많이 받으셨지만, 저에게도 저의 정체성을 새롭게 정립할 수 있는 도전이 되었습니다.
부흥회를 통해서 실질적인 전략도 제시해주셨는데, 그것은 로컬 처치로서 가지는 볼티모어교회의 역할에 대해서 강조해주신 부분입니다. 선교를 먼 거리에 있는 곳만 하려하지 말고, 바로 이 지역 사회 가운데 복음을 전파하는 역할을 감당하라고 강조하셨고, 저 역시 크게 공감하였습니다. 하나님께서는 볼티모어교회를 바로 이 지역에 세우셨고, 분명히 주님의 뜻을 가지고 계시기 때문입니다. 이제 이러한 말씀과 연결된 지혜로운 전략을 세우고 그것을 실천해야 함을 분명하게 깨닫게 되었습니다.
선교 부흥회를 허락하신 하나님께 감사드립니다. 그리고 귀한 부흥회 그리고 선교의 달이 은혜 가운데 마치게 되어 또한 감사드립니다. 하나님께서 지금까지 그러하셨던 것처럼 앞으로도, 볼티모어교회를 주님의 뜻을 힘있게 추구해 나가는 아름다운 교회로 세워나가시기를 진심으로 기도합니다.
Baltimore Church is a truly wonderful church. The reason is that it continuously holds on to the essence of the church and pursues it faithfully. I am always thankful that all the members dream of this kind of biblical church.
This was my first Mission Month and Mission Revival as the senior pastor, and it was very meaningful. I was able to join in the spiritual atmosphere of the church and spend a month deeply reflecting on and sharing the message of the gospel.
I’m especially thankful that we had the precious time of the revival with Pastor Daeyoung Kim from Fellowship Church.
Listening to Pastor Kim’s three sermons, I felt my heart burning. His devotion as a missionary, his passionate ministry, and his testimonies of how the Lord saved his life and continues to use him to serve the church with the gospel were deeply touching.
What stood out especially was his clear definition of the purpose of a believer’s life: “To reconcile the countless people who have not heard of Jesus with God.”
His strong declaration that we must become people who offer ourselves to God was also powerful. Even a short conversation with Pastor Kim revealed his deep devotion to God. His sincerity could be felt from the heart, and that sincerity flowed through his preaching.
Many people hold on to their own reasoning, but Pastor Kim emphasized that in the end, we must trust God, go beyond our own thoughts in faith, and become those who offer ourselves wholly to Him. His words were powerful because they reflected his true life journey.
What challenged me the most was his declaration: “We are all missionaries.” To the members of the immigrant church who are burdened by daily life, he proclaimed that missions is not a task given only to certain people, but a calling given to every believer. Through this declaration of mission, many members were touched by grace, and it also challenged me to newly establish my own identity.
Pastor Kim also presented a practical strategy during the revival, emphasizing the role of Baltimore Church as a local church. He encouraged us not to focus only on distant mission fields, but to carry out our role of spreading the gospel right here in our local community. I deeply agreed. God established Baltimore Church in this region, and He clearly has a purpose for it. Now I clearly realize that we must develop a wise strategy connected to this message and put it into practice.
I give thanks to God for allowing this Mission Revival. I am also grateful that both the precious revival and Mission Month ended with much grace. Just as God has done so far, I sincerely pray that He will continue to build Baltimore Church into a beautiful church that boldly pursues His will.
볼티모어 교회는 매년 3월을 선교의 달로 정하고 선교에 집중하고 있습니다. 처음에 부임하고 교회를 전반적으로 살피면서, 이런 귀한 프로젝트가 있다는 것이 참 감사했습니다. 왜냐하면 교회 전반적으로는 선교를 잘 감당하고 있음에도 불구하고, 선교에 대해서 성도님들이 가까이 경험하기가 쉽지 않기 때문입니다.
그러나 특별한 달을 정해서 교회가 현재 섬기고 있는 선교지와 선교 단체를 소개하고, 그리고 협력하는 기관들이 방문하셔서 사역을 소개하는 것을 통해서 교회 전체가 선교의 비전으로 하나될 수 있다는 것은 참으로 지혜로운 전략이라고 생각했습니다.
그리고 그 중심에 선교 부흥회가 있습니다. 올해 주제는 "부흥을 넘어 선교적 교회로" 입니다. 기도하면서 주제를 정하는데 마음이 참 벅찼습니다. 왜냐하면 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 교회가 바로 선교적 교회이기 때문입니다.
만약에 교회의 목적 자체를 '부흥'에만 둔다면 그것은 자칫 우리만의 즐거움을 끝날 가능성이 있습니다. 내가 은혜를 받는 것에만 초점을 맞출 수 있기 때문입니다. 그러나 부흥이 아니라 선교적 교회로 나가는데 우리의 비전을 맞춘다면, 이것이야 말로 더 아름다운 목적을 이루는 것입니다. 성도님들 한분 한분이 마치 선교사처럼 자신의 마음과 태도를 준비하고, 세상 속으로 들어가 주님의 복음을 살아가는 것이 선교적 교회이며, 이것이야 말로 하나님의 꿈이기 때문입니다.
선교 위원장으로 섬기시는 신승철 장로님, 전도 부장으로 섬기시는 구인숙 권사님, 그리고 회계로 섬기시는 배기교 권사님과 함께 한국일보에 방문해서 부흥회를 소개하고 또 인터뷰 하는 시간을 가졌습니다. 바쁜 중에도 사랑과 열심으로 섬기시는 선교위원회가 있다는 것이 참 감사할 따름입니다.
이번에 부흥회 강사로 오시는 김대영 목사님을 일전에 찾아뵙고 이야기를 나누는데 참 좋았습니다. 김목사님께서는 선교적 교회라는 성경적인 비전을 확고하게 가지고 탁월하게 목회해 오셨습니다. 저는 목회 후배로서 그간 쌓아오신 김목사님의 깊은 연륜과 지혜를 듣고 배울 수 있다는 것이 참 좋았습니다. 그리고 저 역시 더욱 주님께서 기뻐하시는 목회자로 그리고 성도로 살아가고픈 뜨거운 마음을 가질 수 있었습니다.
교회는 하나님의 것이며, 우리는 예수 그리스도의 몸된 지체입니다. 교회를 가장 앞장서서 섬기는 목사로서 볼티 모어 교회 가운데 선교에 대한 뜨거운 비전이 있음에 참으로 감사드립니다. 귀한 김대영 목사님을 모시고 성경적인 하나님의 꿈에 대해서 다시 한번 듣고 배우고 감격하면서, 볼티모어 교회가 한걸음 더 주님께서 기뻐하시는 교회로 나아가기를 소망합니다. 그리고 함께 기도하고 마음을 모으는 부흥회를 통해서, 그리고 앞으로 펼쳐질 모든 사역을 통해서 오직 하나님께서 영광 받으시고 하나님의 나라가 더욱 확장 될 것을 믿고 기도합니다.
Baltimore Church designates March as Mission Month each year, focusing on mission work. As I took on my new role and observed the church as a whole, I was deeply grateful to see such a precious project in place. Although the church has been faithfully engaged in missions, it is not always easy for church members to personally experience and connect with missions.
However, by dedicating a special month to missions—introducing the mission fields and organizations the church is currently supporting and inviting partner ministries to share their work—the entire congregation can unite under a shared vision for missions. I found this to be a wise and strategic approach.
At the heart of this mission month is the Revival Conference. This year’s theme is “Beyond Revival, Toward a Missional Church.” As I prayed about this theme, my heart was deeply moved. This is because a church that pleases God is, at its core, a missional church.
If a church’s goal is solely revival, it can easily become focused only on our own spiritual experiences and blessings. While personal grace is important, it must not be the end goal. However, if we align our vision beyond revival toward becoming a missional church, we pursue a greater and more beautiful purpose.
A missional church is one where every believer embraces the mindset of a missionary—preparing their heart and attitude to live out the gospel in the world. This is the very dream of God.
Recently, I visited The Korea Daily with Elder Shin Seung-Chul, the Missions Committee Chair, along with Deaconess Koo In-Sook, the Evangelism Department Head, and Deaconess Bae Gi-Kyo, the Treasurer. We had the opportunity to introduce the Revival Conference and share an interview about it. I am truly grateful for the dedicated Missions Committee members who serve with love and passion despite their busy schedules.
I also had the privilege of meeting Pastor Kim Dae-Young, the guest speaker for our Revival Conference, before his visit. It was an uplifting conversation. Pastor Kim has been faithfully leading his church with a strong biblical vision of a missional church. As a younger pastor, I found it enriching to hear his wisdom and experience, which he has cultivated over the years. It also renewed my passion to serve the Lord more faithfully—as both a pastor and a believer.
The church belongs to God, and we are all members of the body of Christ. As a pastor serving Baltimore Church, I am profoundly grateful that our church carries a strong vision for missions. I eagerly look forward to learning, rejoicing, and being inspired by Pastor Kim as we hear once again about God’s biblical vision.
I pray that Baltimore Church will continue to grow into a church that pleases the Lord. Through this Revival Conference, as we pray and unite our hearts, and through all the ministries that will unfold in the future, I firmly believe that God alone will be glorified and His Kingdom will continue to expand.
저는 매달 마다 구역 예배가 기다려 집니다. 설교하고 가르치는 것이 저의 일이지만, 사실 저는 듣는 것을 더 좋아하기 때문입니다. 성도님들의 사는 이야기들을 듣는 것은 저의 행복입니다. 그래서 성도님들의 이야기를 듣기 위해서 매번 구역 모임에 찾아갑니다. 그리고 필요한대로 이제 한창 자리잡고 있는 북클럽 셋팅을 조율하고 있습니다.
이번에 12구역에 참석하고 참 좋았습니다. 구역장이신 한영의 권사님께서 구역원들에게 전화하시고 또 상황을 부지런히 살피히면서 사랑으로 돌보시는 모습이 정말 좋았습니다. 결국 공동체가 세워지는 것은 누군가의 헌신적인 사랑을 통해서 세워진다는 것을 다시 한번 깊이 경험했습니다. 모임 전에 안부를 물으면서 서로 오고가는 삶의 이야기들 속에서 듣는 것이 좋았고, 서로 격려하는 것이 좋았습니다. 권사님께서는 제가 준비해 드린 교안을 잘 이해하시고 차분하게 잘 인도하셨습니다.
김완근 장로님께서 말씀 나눔 인도는 정말 놀라웠습니다. 베테랑 중에 베테랑이라고 생각했습니다. 최대한 자신의 말을 자제하시면서도 필요할 때에 적절히 이야기하시고, 또 구역원들의 발표의 작은 부분들이라도 격려하시고 함께 박수치게 하는 모든 부분들이 저의 철학을 정확하게 이해하고 계시다고 생각했습니다. 누구도 소외되지 않고 서로 이야기할 수 있도록 이끌어주시고, 또 그 안에서 행복을 만들어 내시는 모습 속에서 저 역시 너무 즐겁고 행복했습니다.
구역원 중에 한분이, 말로는 나는 잘 못한다고 하시지만 실제로는 참 잘하셔서 좋았습니다. 신앙은 항상 발전하는 것이고 또 그 발전하시는 모습이 보여서 좋았습니다. 중요한 것은, 현재의 나의 모습에서 '딱 한걸음' 더 나아가는 것입니다. 당연히 북클럽 셋팅은 마음에 부담이 됩니다. 하지만, 진정으로 나의 발전을 원한다면, 그리고 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 소그룹을 원한다면 반드시 필요합니다. 그리고 잠시의 어려움을 넘어가서, 나의 말로 나의 신앙으로 고백하고 또 격려받고 나누는 모든 과정을 통해서 우리는 성경적인 기쁨을 충만하게 경험합니다. 결국 그 모임은 다시 오고 싶은 모임이 되는 것입니다.
저 역시 시간 가는 줄 모르고 모임에 참여했습니다. 준비하신 사랑의 간식을 나누면서 또 좋았습니다. 사실 많이 피곤한 상태였지만 전혀 피곤하지가 않았습니다. 왜냐하면 모임에 기쁨이 있고 즐거움이 있었기 때문입니다. 짧은 시간이었지만 성도님들께서 발표하신 부분에서 장점들을 짚어 드렸습니다. 제가 모든 부분에서 말씀드리지는 않지만, 말씀 나눔을 통해서 성장하고 계시다는 확신이 들었습니다. 작은 부분들이라도 성도님들께서 스스로 전진해 나가시는 모습이 벅차고 좋았습니다. 구역의 기쁨이 곧 교회 전체의 기쁨이라는 확신 가운데 모임을 나왔습니다.
앞으로도 12구역 안에서 하나님의 기쁨이 넘치기를 기도합니다. 또한 여러 어려움 속에서도 헌신적으로 섬기시고 구역을 이끌어가시는 한영의 권사님에게 하나님께서 넘치는 은혜 주시기를 기도합니다. 이미 탁월한 김완근 장로님의 리더십이, 앞으로 구역 모임이 지속될 수록 더욱 발전되고 빛나시기를 또한 기도합니다.
I look forward to the district worship service every month. Preaching and teaching are part of my ministry, but, in truth, I enjoy listening even more. Listening to the life stories of our church members brings me great joy. That is why I make it a priority to attend each district gathering, eager to hear their stories. At the same time, I am also adjusting the setup of the book club, which is now taking root.
Attending the 12th district gathering this time was a truly wonderful experience. I was deeply touched by the dedication of Deacon Han Yeong-ui, who diligently checks in on the members, makes phone calls, and cares for them with love. Once again, I was reminded that a community is built upon the sacrificial love of someone who commits to its growth. I enjoyed listening to the members share about their lives before the gathering officially began, and it was heartwarming to witness their encouragement for one another. Deacon Han also led the discussion with a calm and clear understanding of the study guide I had prepared.
I was particularly amazed by Elder Kim Wan-geun’s leadership in facilitating the discussion. He truly is a veteran among veterans. He wisely refrained from speaking too much himself but stepped in at just the right moments. His encouragement of even the smallest contributions from the members and his ability to create an atmosphere where everyone could join in—even celebrating each other’s sharing with applause—made me realize how well he understands my vision. He ensured that no one was left out, allowing everyone to participate in the discussion, and in doing so, he fostered a sense of joy and belonging. Witnessing this made me personally feel deeply happy and fulfilled.
One of the members mentioned feeling inadequate in sharing but, in reality, did an excellent job. Faith is always about growth, and I was grateful to see that growth happening. The key is to take just "one more step" forward from where we are today. Naturally, the book club structure may feel like a challenge at first, but if we truly desire to grow and seek a small group that pleases God, it is absolutely necessary. Once we overcome the initial difficulty, we can experience the joy of professing our faith, receiving encouragement, and sharing together in a deeply biblical way. This process transforms the gathering into one that people will long to return to.
I, too, was so engaged in the meeting that I lost track of time. Sharing the lovingly prepared refreshments added to the warmth of our fellowship. Despite being quite tired that day, I did not feel weary at all, because the gathering was filled with joy and delight. Though the time was short, I was able to highlight the strengths of the members’ contributions. I may not have commented on every single detail, but I was fully convinced that they are growing through these discussions. Seeing the members take steps forward, even in small ways, was truly moving. I left the meeting with the firm belief that the joy of the district gatherings ultimately contributes to the joy of the entire church.
I continue to pray that the 12th district will be overflowing with God's joy. I also pray that God will pour out abundant grace upon Deacon Han Yeong-ui, who serves with such dedication despite the challenges. Additionally, I pray that the outstanding leadership of Elder Kim Wan-geun will shine even brighter as the district gatherings continue to flourish.
하나님께서는 하나님의 형상을 따라 인간을 만드셨습니다. 삼위일체 하나님께서 영원한 사랑의 관계 속에서 완전하게 존재하시는 것처럼, 우리 인간은 의미 있는 따뜻한 관계 속에서 행복과 삶의 의미를 경험합니다.
그러나 안타깝게도 우리가 지금 살아가는 시대는, 관계가 단절된 시대입입니다. 사람들은 다른 타인과 의미 있는 관계를 맺고 따뜻한 대화를 나누고 싶어 합니다. 그러나 각자가 자신의 삶에 바쁜 나머지 다른 사람을 돌아볼 여유를 갖지 못합니다. 혹은 다른 이를 섬기고 싶은 마음이 있지만, 방법을 모르는 경우도 종종 있습니다.
성도로서 성장한다는 것은, 하나님을 닮아가는 것입니다. 그분의 사랑, 인내, 격려, 권면, 진리, 정의를 배우며 닮아가는 것입니다. 교회 안에 많은 양육 프로그램이 있겠지만, 실제로 이것을 이루기 위해서는 단순히 강의만으로는 부족합니다. 성경적인 글을 읽고 함께 대화하며 서로를 격려하고 서로가 서로에게 배우며 성장하는 북클럽 이 반드시 필요한 이유입니다.
담임 목사로서 성도님들과 함께 본격적인 북클럽을 할 수 있게 되어서 하나님께 감사드립니다. 저는 저의 삶 전부가, 그리고 저의 모든 학업이 북클럽에 맞추어져 있습니다. 또한 제가 지금까지 성장한 모든 배경에 책과 북클럽이 존재합니다. 그러므로 이 양육 프로그램을 통해서 제가 가진 가장 좋은 것을 성도님들께 드릴 수 있어 저는 참으로 기쁜 마음입니다.
북클럽은 함께 성장하며 주님을 닮아가는 자리입니다. 그리고 복음으로 내 마음과 생각과 태도를 변화시켜, 궁극적으로 참된 교회의 본질로 회복되는 회복의 자리입니다. 볼티모어 교회에서 양육 프로그램의 공식적인 이름을 기도하면서 결정했습니다.
원래 "리딩크리스천"이라는 기존의 제가 운영하는 북클럽의 이름이 있지만, 볼티모어 교회만을 위해서 "은혜의 샘터 북클럽"이라고 새롭게 이름을 만들었습니다. 이 모임을 통해서 성도님들이 모여서 함께 은혜를 누리고 생수의 근원 되신 예수 그리스도로 충만해지기를, 그래서 꽃처럼 활짝 피어나는 인생 되시기를 원하는 마음으로 지었습니다.
이번에 함께 나눌 "복음이 울다"는 참으로 귀한 책입니다. 데이비드 플랫 목사님의 아주 짧은 여행기를 통해서, 복음, 그리고 복음으로 영혼을 섬기는 것의 의미를 찾아가는 탁월한 책입니다. 무리가 되겠지만 최대한 저의 시간을 조절해서 일주일네 네번의 클래스를 오픈하려고 합니다.

성도는 세상 속에 존재합니다. 그것은 목회자도 마찬가지입니다. 저는 교회에서 일을 하지만, 항상 세상 속에 존재해야 한다고 생각합니다. 믿지 않는 분들을 만나고, 그들의 이야기를 듣고 교제하며, 그분들이 자신의 삶의 의미와 아름다움을 발견할 수 있도록 돕는 것이 목회자의 사명이라고 생각합니다.
복음은 전달해야 하지만, 강요할 수는 없는 것입니다. 그리고 복음은 따뜻한 관계 속에서 전달됩니다. 누군가와 마시는 따뜻한 커피 한잔의 시간이, 그리고 어려움을 듣고 경청해 주는 그 의미있는 순간들이 우리의 지친 삶에 힘이 됩니다. 그런 면에서 저는 교회를 나오지 않는 분들과의 북클럽 역시 너무나 소중히 여깁니다.
그래서 "리딩 피플 북클럽"을 시작합니다. 기독교 책이 아닌, "불편한 편의점"이라는 정말 따뜻한 소설을 함께 읽고 나눌 예정입니다. 저는 목사이지만 이 시간 만큼은 복음을 강요하지 않습니다. 그저 함께 삶을 나누고, 그 안에서 서로를 격려하고 응원할 수 있다면 그것만으로도 하나님께서 우리에게 허락하신 큰 축복입니다.
교회의 여러 사역도 감당해야 하기 때문에, 아쉽게도 한 클래스로 시작합니다. 3월 25일 부터 매주 화요일 10시, 총 아홉 번의 모임을 가집니다. 북클럽 오리엔테이션을 포함해서 누구든지 하실 수 있도록 친절하게 안내해드리고 모임을 이끌어갈 예정입니다.
교회에 다니시지 않는 누구라도 함께하실 수 있습니다. 그리고 만약에 볼티모어 교회 성도님의 친구분이 모임을 하고 싶어 한다면, 저희 성도님도 함께 하실 수 있습니다. Catonsville에 있는 Panera에서 모임을 합니다. 본인 커피 값만 내시면 됩니다. 최소 4명에서 최대 6명으로 모입니다. 이 모임을 통해서 인생의 진정한 회복과 기쁨을 누리실 수 있으리라 확신합니다. 아래 링크를 통해서 리딩 피플 북클럽에 대한 자세한 사항을 확인하실 수 있습니다.
God created mankind in His image. Just as the Triune God exists perfectly in an eternal relationship of love, we, as human beings, experience happiness and the meaning of life through meaningful and warm relationships.
However, sadly, we live in an era of disconnection. People desire meaningful relationships and warm conversations with others, yet they are often too busy with their own lives to take the time to care for others. Some may have the heart to serve others but lack the knowledge of how to do so.
Growing as a believer means becoming more like God—learning and embodying His love, patience, encouragement, exhortation, truth, and justice. While the church offers many discipleship programs, mere lectures are not enough to achieve true spiritual growth. This is why a book club that involves reading biblical literature, engaging in discussions, encouraging one another, and learning from each other is essential.
As the senior pastor, I am grateful to God for the opportunity to launch an official book club with our congregation. My entire life and academic journey have been centered around book clubs. Books and book clubs have played a significant role in my personal growth. Through this discipleship program, I am thrilled to share the best of what I have with our church members.
The book club is a place where we grow together and become more like Christ. It is also a space for restoration—where the gospel transforms our hearts, minds, and attitudes, ultimately restoring us to the true essence of the Church. After much prayer, we have decided on the official name for this discipleship program at Baltimore Church.
Although I have been running a book club called Reading Christian, I have created a new name specifically for Baltimore Church—The Spring of Grace Book Club. This name reflects my hope that through this gathering, our church members will experience God’s grace together, be filled with Jesus Christ, the source of living water, and blossom like flowers in their lives.
The book we will be discussing this time, Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream by David Platt, is truly a precious work. Through the author’s short yet powerful journey, this book excellently explores the meaning of the gospel and what it means to serve souls through the gospel. Although it may be challenging, I will adjust my schedule as much as possible to open four classes per week.
One thing I can say with certainty is that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The book club will begin the week of March 18, and registration opens this week. I strongly encourage you to make time to join us.

Believers exist in the world, and this applies to pastors as well. Though I work in the church, I firmly believe that I must always be present in the world. Meeting those who do not believe, listening to their stories, building relationships, and helping them discover the meaning and beauty of their lives is a vital mission of pastoral ministry.
The gospel must be shared, but it cannot be forced upon anyone. The gospel is conveyed through warm, genuine relationships. A simple moment of sharing a cup of coffee with someone, listening attentively to their struggles, and being present in meaningful moments can bring strength to our weary lives. In this sense, I deeply value book clubs that include those who do not attend church.
That is why I am launching the Reading People Book Club. Instead of a Christian book, we will be reading and discussing Uncomfortable convenience store (불편한 편의점), a heartwarming novel. Although I am a pastor, I will not impose the gospel in these gatherings. My hope is simply to share life together, encourage one another, and support each other. That alone is a great blessing that God allows us to experience.
Due to my various church responsibilities, I will start with just one class. The book club will meet every Tuesday at 10 AM for a total of nine sessions, starting on March 25. The first session will include an orientation, and I will guide everyone through the discussions in a welcoming and supportive way.
Anyone who does not attend church is welcome to join. If a Baltimore Church member has a friend who would like to participate, they are also welcome to join alongside them. Meetings will be held at Panera in Catonsville. Participants will only need to cover their own coffee expenses. The group will have a minimum of four and a maximum of six members.

볼티코어 교회의 리더 훈련은 분명한 목표를 가지고 있습니다. 그것은, 리더들이 먼저 행복한 소그룹을 경험하는 것입니다. 그리고 리더들의 행복과 좋은 관계가, 교회 전체에 선한 영향을 끼치게 하는 것입니다.
모든 교회가 리더 교육의 중요성을 알고 있습니다. 그리고 단순히 구역 리더 분들을 모시고 리더십에 대해서 강의하는 것은 저에게 어려운 일이 아닙니다. 그러나 오랫동안 생각했던 것은, 리더십은 강의로만 배울 수 없다는 것입니다. 좋은 리더가 되기 위해서는 본인이 먼저 좋은 소그룹 안에서 서로를 알아가고 함께 은혜를 누리고 그 안에서 긍정적인 변화를 경험해야 합니다.
그래서 저는 구역 예배를 준비하기 위해서 현장에서 강의하지 않습니다. 강의는 영상을 통해서 미리 준비해드리고 오히려 모임 당일에는 실제 소그룹에 초점을 맞춥니다. 저와 박동민 목사님, 그리고 제 아내를 통해서 함께 북클럽 셋팅을 만들고, 다음 달에 있을 구역 예배 교제로 실제로 소그룹 모임을 하면서 리더분들이 은혜를 누리도록 돕고 있습니다.
사람들은 어떤 모임이든 나와 비슷한 연령대를 편하게 생각합니다. 실제로 동년배의 사람들과 대화하는 것이 즐겁고 도움이 됩니다. 그러나 영적인 관계를 맺어가다 보면 나와 다른 연령대의 분들과 모임을 하는 것 역시 매우 유익하고 감동이 된다는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 그것이 intergenerational 교육입니다. 그래서 의도적으로 다양한 연령대로 구성된 구역 리더분들과 북클럽 셋팅의 소그룹을 진행하고 있는 것입니다.
저는 지난 주 리더 모임이 참 좋았습니다. 모든 리더 분들이 저보다 연장자이셨습니다. 그래서 참 좋았습니다. 어르신들이 자신의 삶 속에서 경험한 신앙의 고민과 결단을 듣는 것이 좋았습니다. 그리고 제가 만약 저 정도 나이가 들었을 때에 과연 저런 믿음으로 살아갈 수 있을 것인가를 생각했습니다. 어쩌면, 귀한 신앙의 선배님들이 걸어가신 길을 따라가는 것만으로도 저에게는 인생의 성공이라 생각했습니다.
저에게 볼티모어 교회는 이제 시작에 불과합니다. 그러나 많은 부분들이 체계가 잡혔고, 특별히 리더 훈련의 부분에서 벌써 확고한 방향을 가지고 섬길 수 있어서 참으로 감사합니다. 그리고 가장 감사한 것은, 저와 리더들이 행복하다는 것입니다. 이것이 가장 중요한 것입니다. 만약에 리더들이 은혜를 받고 행복하다면, 당연히 구역원들을 더 잘 섬길 수 있을 것입니다. 본인이 리더 소그룹에서 먼저 경험한 칭찬, 격려, 권면, 사랑 등을 자신의 구역 모임 안에서 자연스럽게 실천할 수 있을 것입니다.
볼티모어 교회 구역 리더 분들의 귀한 사랑 그리고 섬김에 감사드립니다. 앞으로도 신실한 믿음의 리더들을 통해서 볼티모어 교회가 더 행복한 교회로 나아갈 것을 믿습니다. 하나님께서 우리의 모든 걸음을 선하게 인도하실 것을 믿고 또한 기도합니다.
The leader training at Baltimore Church has a clear goal: for leaders to first experience a joyful and thriving small group themselves. The happiness and strong relationships of these leaders will naturally have a positive impact on the entire church.
Every church recognizes the importance of leader training. And while simply gathering district leaders and giving lectures on leadership is not a difficult task for me, I have long believed that leadership cannot be learned through lectures alone. To become a good leader, one must first experience a healthy and grace-filled small group—getting to know one another, sharing in God’s grace, and witnessing positive changes within themselves.
Therefore, I do not conduct on-site lectures to prepare for district worship. Instead, I provide pre-recorded lectures through video and focus the actual meeting day on the small group experience itself. Together with Pastor Dongmin Park and my wife, we have established a book club setting, using next month’s district worship material to create real small group gatherings where leaders can personally experience spiritual enrichment.
People naturally feel most comfortable with others of a similar age group. Conversations with peers are enjoyable and beneficial. However, as we build spiritual relationships, we come to realize that engaging with people of different age groups is also deeply meaningful and inspiring. This is the essence of intergenerational education. For this reason, we intentionally structure our district leader groups and book club small groups with diverse age ranges.
Last week’s leader gathering was truly a blessing. All the leaders were older than me, and I found it to be a wonderful experience. Listening to their faith struggles and decisions throughout their lives was deeply moving. It made me reflect on whether I would be able to live with such faith when I reach their age. In a way, I believe that simply following the path of these great spiritual predecessors would already be a great success in life.
For me, Baltimore Church is still in its early stages. However, many structures have already been established, and I am truly grateful that we have a clear and firm direction, especially in leader training. Above all, I am most thankful that both the leaders and I are experiencing joy in this process. This is the most important factor. When leaders receive grace and experience happiness, they will naturally serve their small groups better. The praise, encouragement, guidance, and love they first experience within their leader groups will naturally be practiced in their own district gatherings.
I sincerely thank all the Baltimore Church district leaders for their love and dedication. I firmly believe that through the faithfulness of these committed leaders, Baltimore Church will continue to grow as a joyful and thriving church. I trust that God will lead every step we take and continue to pray for His guidance.
제가 2024년 10월에 부임했기 때문에, 2025년을 준비하는 것이 쉽지가 않았습니다. 새로운 한해를 계획하는 것이 시간이 필요한 것인데 절대적인 시간이 부족했습니다. 그리고 저에 대한 기대와 또 앞으로 교회가 더 잘 되기를 원하는 귀한 마음들을 가지고 계시는 것을 알고 있었기 때문에 마음에 적잖이 부담도 있습니다.
성도님들과 대화를 나눠보니, 특히 제직 세미나에 대한 기대가 있으시다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 제직은 교회의 핵심 멤버이고 교회를 섬기고 또 이끌어가는 분들이기 때문에 저 역시 중요하다고 생각했습니다. 그래서 오랫동안 하나님 앞에서 기도하면서 준비를 하였습니다.
요즘에 저에게 주시는 아이디어는, 교회의 중요한 모임을 위해 영상을 미리 준비하는 것입니다. 예를 들어서, 제직 수련회를 위해서 미리 강의의 내용을 녹화해서 공유하는 것입니다. 이것의 유익은, 성도님들께서 필요하신대로 계속 보실 수 있고, 또 실제 모임 때에는 이미 전반적인 내용을 아시는 분들이기 때문에, 목회자로서 더 핵심적으로 필요한 것들을 강조할 수 있다는 것입니다. 그래서 미리 교안을 준비하고 영상을 만들어서 성도님들께 보내드렸습니다.
제직 수련회의 전체적인 방향은, 리더십으로 잡았습니다. 단순히 목회자만 리더가 아니라, 제직들 모두가 교회의 리더이며 그런 맥락에서 함께 마음을 모으기를 원했습니다. 켄 블랜차드의 리더십의 정의, 그리고 짐 콜린스의 좋은 리더의 특징을 간단하게 정리해서 말씀을 드렸습니다.
그리고 교회의 비전을 함께 나누었습니다. 저는 단지 교회가 아니더라도 좋은 공동체는, 그 공동체의 비전을 모두가 함께 품고 가는 것이라고 생각합니다. 길거리를 지나가다가, 당신이 속한 공동체의 비전이 무엇이냐고 누군가 갑자기 물어보더라도 대답할 수 있어야 합니다. 특별히 교회의 리더인 제직은 더 그러합니다.
볼티모어 교회의 비전은 "서로 사랑하며, 진실하게 예배함으로 성숙하여 복음을 전하는 교회" 입니다. 이 안에 교회를 향한 하나님의 꿈 그리고 교회의 본질이 압축되어 있습니다. 이 내용을 풀어서 함께 나누고, 다시 한번 교회의 비전으로 마음을 모아 주시기를 부탁드렸습니다.
그리고 제직의 역할에 대해서 설명드렸습니다. 장로님, 권사님, 그리고 집사님들의 성경적 역할에 대해서 간략히 말씀드리고, '자기 자신'에게 있어서 무엇을 실천할지를 그룹으로 나누도록 인도했습니다. 참 좋았습니다. 진지하게 저의 강의를 들으시는 모습들이 좋았고, 또 열정적으로 나누시고 박수치는 모습이 참 좋았습니다.
그리고 올해 있을 목회 계획에 대해서 말씀드렸습니다. 현재 준비하고 있는 추가적인 내부 북클럽인 '은혜의 샘터' 양육과 외부 북클럽인 '리딩 피플'에 대한 안내를 해드렸습니다. 그리고 임직, 부흥회, 전교인 수련회 등의 중요한 행사들을 안내해드렸습니다.
모든 나눔의 시간이 참 좋았습니다. 그리고 마음이 벅찼습니다. 성도의 기쁨은 교회가 잘 되는 것이며, 하나님을 향한 소망으로 마음을 가득 채우는 것인데 그런 점에서 제직 수련회는 정말 좋았습니다. 제 마음도 기뻤고, 또 성도님들의 얼굴이 밝아서 참 좋았습니다.
담임 목사로서, 교회를 참으로 사랑하고 아끼고 열심으로 섬기는 제직들이 계셔서 행복합니다. 앞으로도 하나님께서 볼티모어 교회 가운데 은혜를 주시고, 아름다운 미래를 열어갈 것을 믿고 소망하고 또 기도합니다.
Since I began my ministry in October 2024, preparing for 2025 has not been easy. Planning for a new year requires time, but I simply did not have enough. Moreover, knowing that many members hold high expectations for me and deeply desire the church to thrive has placed a significant burden on my heart.
Through conversations with church members, I realized that there is a particular expectation for the leadership seminar. Since church leaders are the core members who serve and guide the church, I also recognized its importance. Therefore, I spent a long time in prayer before God as I prepared for it.
Recently, God has given me the idea of preparing videos in advance for important church meetings. For example, I recorded and shared the lecture content ahead of time for the leadership retreat. The benefit of this approach is that church members can revisit the material as needed, and since they are already familiar with the overall content, I, as a pastor, can focus on emphasizing the key points during the actual gathering. So, I prepared the lecture materials, created the video, and sent it to the members.
The central theme of the leadership retreat was leadership itself. Leadership is not just about pastors; all church leaders, including the deacons, play a crucial role. I wanted to unite our hearts in this understanding. I briefly introduced Ken Blanchard's definition of leadership and Jim Collins’ characteristics of a great leader.
Additionally, we shared the church’s vision together. I believe that a good community, whether a church or not, is one where all its members carry the vision in their hearts. If someone were to suddenly ask you on the street what your community’s vision is, you should be able to answer confidently. This is especially true for church leaders.
The vision of Baltimore Church is: "A church that loves one another, worships sincerely, matures in faith, and proclaims the gospel."
Within this statement lies God’s dream for the church and the essence of its mission. We unpacked this vision together and encouraged everyone to recommit their hearts to it.
We also discussed the role of church leaders. I briefly explained the biblical roles of elders, kwonsas (ordained women leaders), and deacons, and then guided the participants to reflect in small groups on how they could personally apply these roles in their own lives. It was a meaningful time. I was deeply moved by how attentively they listened to my lecture, and it was wonderful to see their passionate discussions and enthusiastic applause.
I also shared the ministry plans for this year. I introduced two upcoming book clubs—an internal discipleship group called “The Well of Grace” and an external outreach book club called “Reading People.” Additionally, I provided information about key events such as ordinations, revival services, and the all-church retreat.
Every moment of sharing was truly special, and my heart was full. The joy of the congregation is found in the growth of the church and in being filled with hope toward God. In that sense, the leadership retreat was a wonderful time. I was happy, and it was a joy to see the bright faces of our church members.
As the senior pastor, I feel blessed to have such dedicated church leaders who genuinely love, cherish, and serve the church with all their hearts. I firmly believe that God will continue to pour His grace upon Baltimore Church and lead us into a beautiful future. I hold onto this hope and continue to pray.
