요즘의 저는 흥분의 연속입니다. 모든 것이 흥미롭습니다. 볼티모어 교회를 배운다는 점에서 그렇고, 또 성도님들을 알아간다는 점에서 그렇습니다. 교회의 전체적인 방향을 장로님들과 논의하면서, 어떤 것이 교회에 가장 유익한가를 기도하면서 결정해 나간다는 점에서 그렇습니다.
저는 목회는 세일즈와 비슷하다고 생각합니다. 가장 좋은 것을 가지고 있다는 확신과, 이것을 상대방이 선택할 수 있도록 설득해야 한다는 점에서 그렇습니다. 제가 아주 쉬운 북클럽 셋팅을 교회 전체에 적용하겠다는 목표를 가지고 있다 하더라도, 그것을 교회의 리더십에서 이해하고 받아들이고 훈련하고 적용하는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다.
교회의 목적은, 성장하는 것입니다. 단순히 숫적인 성장이 아니라 성도님들의 영혼이 반드시 기쁨을 맛보고 성장해야 합니다. 예배를 통해서 은혜를 경험해야하고 그것이 개인적인 내면화로 녹아들어가야 합니다. 그러기 위해서는 신앙적인 탁월한 내용을 깊이 나누어야 합니다. 자신의 생각을 스스로 작극하고 서로에게 배우는 매우 적극적인 교육 공동체가 필요합니다. 그 모임은 한편으로는 접근성이 매우 높아야 하지만, 또 한편으로는 수준이 있어야 합니다.
부임하자 마자 북클럽 셋팅으로 전환할 것을 설명드리고 설득하는 과정을 거쳤습니다. 여러번 실제 리더 모임을 북클럽 셋팅으로 하면서 익숙해 지시도록 섬겼습니다. 저와 박동민 목사님 그리고 제 아내가 직접 리더가 되어서 모임을 이끌면서 실제로 북클럽 셋팅을 경험하도록 최대한 노력했습니다. 그리고 드디어, 전체 구역 모임의 날이 되었습니다.
저는 이 날을 얼마나 기다렸는지 모릅니다. 그리고 동시에 많이 긴장하였습니다. 이미 신앙의 저력이 있는 교회이고 좋은 리더분들이 많이 있지만, 이것을 새로운 셋팅에서 구현하는 것은 또 다른 일이기 때문입니다. 저는 담임 목사로서 모임의 진행을 살피고 섬길 책임이 있습니다. 그래서 구역 예배를 돌아가면서 돌아보기 위해서 이번에는 14구역 모임에 함께 하였습니다.
구역 모임의 구조는 짧은 예배 그리고 이후에 말씀 나눔 (북클럽)으로 나누었습니다. 먼저 첫 순서로, 구역장이신 오선미 권사님이 정말 차분하게 놀랄만큼 구역 예배를 잘 인도해주셨습니다. 제가 준비해드린 내용에 따라서 순서대로 예배를 잘 진행해주셔서 구역 모임의 시간이 아주 경건한 모습으로 진행되고 또 거룩한 분위기가 만들어졌습니다. 권사님의 차분함과 리더십이 정말 좋았습니다.
그리고 인도자이신 김진일 장로님께서 말씀 나눔 인도를 시작하셨습니다. 정말 좋았습니다. 적은 인원이 아닌데도 배우신대로 사람들의 의견을 경청하면서 격려하면서 그리고 서로의 피드백을 이끌어내도록 잘 인도하셨습니다. 아마 제가 인도해도 이것보다 더 잘할 자신이 없을만큼 잘 인도하셨습니다. 혹시라도 어려운점이 있다면 제가 도와드릴 마음이 있었지만, 제 도움은 전혀 필요 없을 정도였습니다.
그리고 모임 가운데 제가 정말 좋았던 것은, 서로가 충분히 나눌 수 있었기 때문입니다. 그리고 깊이가 있었기 때문입니다. 주제는 존파이퍼 목사님의 아티클 중에서 '하나님께 가까이 가는 것'에 대한 아티클을 나누었습니다. 제가 굳이 이것으로 고른 이유는, 연초에 있어서 교회에 있어 정말로 중요한 주제라고 생각했기 때문입니다. 하나님께 가까이 가는 것이야 말로 부흥의 본질이라고 확신했기 때문입니다.
장로님의 인도를 보면서 참 감사했습니다. 마치 저의 분신처럼 느껴졌기 때문입니다. 제가 추구하는 전형적인 북클럽의 포멧으로 진행해주셔서 감사드렸고, 그렇게 잘 인도하시는 모습을 보니 감격이 되었습니다.
구역원들께서도 자신의 마음을 잘 나누어 주셨습니다. 그런 생각이 들더군요, '우주와 우주가 만나는구나' 한 사람의 삶을 돌아보면 참으로 많은 일들이 있고 수 많은 컨택스트가 존재합니다. 그리고 구역 모임 안에서, 존파이퍼 목사님의 아티클을 통해서 진지하게 또 한편으로는 솔직하게 서로가 마음을 교감하는 것이 너무 보기가 좋았고 또 기적처럼 느껴졌습니다.
성도님들의 행복한 얼굴, 그리고 또 아름다운 분위기를 보니 마음이 울컥했습니다. 저의 지난 20년을 돌아보게 되었습니다. 긴 시간 외롭게 공부하고 수고했던 모든 어려움이 아무것도 아닌 것처럼 느껴졌습니다. 그리고 앞으로가 더 기대가 되었습니다. 이렇게 좋은 모임으로 한번, 두번, 그렇게 모임이 지나면서 얼마나 더 은헤가 풍성해 질까요? 또 얼마나 아름다운 교제가 많이 일어나게 될까요? 모든 것을 선하게 인도하시는 하나님께 감사드립니다. 그리고 교회의 미래를 주님의 손에 맡깁니다.
These Days, I Am Continuously Excited Everything feels fascinating to me. I am excited about learning more about Baltimore Church and getting to know the congregation. I also find it thrilling to discuss the church’s overall direction with the elders and to make decisions through prayer, seeking what is most beneficial for the church.
I believe that ministry is similar to sales in some ways. It requires the confidence that we have the best thing to offer and the ability to persuade others to choose it. Even if I have a goal of applying a very simple book club setting throughout the church, it is not easy for the church leadership to fully understand, accept, train, and implement it.
The purpose of the church is growth—not just in numbers but in the joy and spiritual maturity of its members. Through worship, believers must experience grace, and that grace must be internalized personally. To achieve this, we need to engage deeply in excellent theological content. A faith community should actively stimulate personal reflection and encourage learning from one another. This community must be highly accessible while also maintaining a certain level of depth.
From the moment I arrived, I began explaining and persuading the church leadership to transition into a book club structure. I repeatedly held actual leader meetings in a book club format to help them become familiar with it. Pastor Dongmin Park, my wife, and I personally led these meetings, doing our best to help them experience the book club setting firsthand. Finally, the day came for the full small group gathering.
I cannot express how much I had been looking forward to this day. At the same time, I was quite nervous. This church already has a strong foundation of faith and many great leaders, but implementing this new setting is another challenge. As the senior pastor, I am responsible for overseeing and supporting these meetings. For this gathering, I decided to visit one of the small groups to observe and encourage the group.
The structure of the small group meeting consisted of a short worship session followed by a discussion time (book club). The meeting began with Deaconess Sunmi Oh, the small group leader, leading the worship. She conducted it so calmly and smoothly that I was truly impressed. She followed the prepared structure faithfully, leading the worship in an orderly manner. This created a reverent and holy atmosphere for the meeting. Her composure and leadership were truly admirable.
Afterward, Elder Jinil Kim facilitated the discussion. It was excellent. Despite the relatively large group, he attentively listened to participants, encouraged them, and skillfully guided the conversation to bring out meaningful feedback. I honestly doubt that I could have led the discussion better myself. I was ready to assist if needed, but he led so well that my help was completely unnecessary.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the meeting was the depth and openness of the discussions. We shared an article by Pastor John Piper on "Drawing Near to God." I specifically chose this topic because I believe it is crucial for the church at the start of the year. After all, drawing near to God is the essence of revival.
Watching the elder lead the discussion, I felt deeply grateful. It was as if I were seeing a reflection of myself. He conducted the meeting exactly in the book club format I envisioned, and witnessing it unfold so smoothly was truly moving.
The small group members also shared their thoughts and hearts openly. I had a profound realization: “A universe is meeting another universe.” Each person carries countless experiences and contexts in their lives. And within the small group meeting, it was amazing to see how John Piper’s article prompted sincere and honest exchanges, creating a deep sense of connection. It felt almost miraculous.
Seeing the joyful faces of the congregation and the beautiful atmosphere of the meeting brought tears to my eyes. I reflected on the past 20 years of my journey. All the lonely years of study and labor suddenly felt insignificant in comparison to this moment. I now look forward to the future with even greater anticipation. As these meetings continue, once, twice, and more, how much more abundant will God’s grace become? How many beautiful moments of fellowship will unfold?
I give thanks to God, who leads everything for good. And I entrust the future of this church into the Lord’s hands.
