목회자의 가장 큰 기쁨은 무엇일까요? 그것은 성도님들이 성장하는 것입니다. 예수 그리스도의 장성한 분량까지 자라기를 원하시는 주님의 부르심을 교회 가운데 이루는 것, 그것이 저의 가장 큰 행복입니다.
선교위원장이신 신승철 장로님은 처음부터 북클럽에 굉장히 적극적이셨습니다. 그리고 누구보다 먼저 저에게 위원회 안에서 모임을 이끌어달라고 부탁하셨습니다.
볼티모어 교회 선교 위원회는 참 열심있는 분들입니다. 어떻게하면 주님의 복음이 전파되고 복음으로 살아갈 것인가에 대한 강한 열망을 가지고 있는 분들입니다. 저는 교회에 부임하면서 '복음이 울다'로 첫 북클럽을 시작하려고 결심했고, 이 책이야 말로 선교 위원회에 너무나 잘 어울린다고 생각했습니다. 그리고 오늘 그 첫 모임을 시작하였습니다.
한시간 넘게 진행된 모임은 참 좋았습니다. 이제 시작이기 때문에 책의 '프롤로그'를 읽고 나누었을 뿐이지만 저자인 데이빗 플랫 목사님의 복음에 대한 간절함이 참여하신 분들의 마음에 깊이 들어간 것 같아서 좋았습니다.
복음을 억지로 강요할 수는 없습니다. 그리고 복음을 억지로 전하라고도 말할 수 없습니다. 우리의 마음이 감동을 받고 또 하나님께서 주시는 은혜를 받아야 선교가 가능합니다. 그런 면에서 북클럽이야 말로 선교의 마음을 만들어낼 수 있는 가장 좋은 형태입니다. 그리고 기도하면서 준비한대로, 하나님께서 모든 분들에게 은혜의 마음을 주셨고 좋은 나눔이 있었습니다.
오랫동안 신앙 생활을 같이 하신 분들이시기 때문에 서로를 더 잘 격려하시는 것이 좋았습니다. 그리고 각자의 상황 속에서 제가 기대하던 것보다 더 잘 하셨고, 또 그 짧은 시간 동안 성숙해져가는 모습이 보여서 감사했습니다. 서로의 깊은 이야기를 나누면서 각자가 가지고 있는 삶의 여정을 들을 수 있어서 좋았습니다. 그리고 저 역시 목회자로서 또 믿음의 길을 함께 걸어가는 성도로서 신앙의 선배님들께 배울 수 있는 귀한 시간이었습니다.
저는 어떤 일이든, '한 걸음'이 중요하다고 생각합니다. 목회는 방대하고 어찌보면 끝이 없는 일이지만, 단 한번의 진실한 시간, 단 한번의 깊이 있는 나눔이 성도의 마음과 삶에 영향을 줍니다. 그리고 그 여정을 통해서 교회 공동체가 자라가는 것입니다. 그래서 오늘의 모임이 저에게는 큰 의미가 있었고 교회를 이끌어가시는 하나님께 감사드립니다.
볼티모어 교회는 3월부터 본격적으로 북클럽을 시작합니다. 2월에는 성도님들께 홍보하고 팀을 만들 예정입니다. 오늘 그 시작을 하나님께서 아름답게 열어주셨습니다. 볼티모어 교회 선교 위원회 가운데 하나님께서 더 큰 은혜 주시기를 기도합니다. 이미 교회를 사랑으로 최선을 다해 섬기고 계신 이분들을 축복합니다. 또한 귀한 이분들의 삶이 더욱 복음 중심으로 변하고, 또 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 아름다운 인생이 되시기를 진심으로 기도합니다.
What is the greatest joy for a pastor? It is seeing the congregation grow. It is fulfilling the Lord’s calling in the church for His people to mature into the full measure of Jesus Christ—and that is my greatest happiness.
Elder Shin Seung-cheol, the head of the mission committee, was very enthusiastic about the book club from the very beginning. He was the first to ask me to lead a meeting within the committee.
The Baltimore Church Mission Committee is filled with passionate individuals. They possess a strong desire to see how the gospel of the Lord can be spread and lived out. When I assumed my role at the church, I decided to start the first book club with Something Needs to Change, believing that this book was perfectly suited for the mission committee. And today, we held that very first meeting.
The meeting, which lasted over an hour, was truly enjoyable. Since it was only the beginning, we read and discussed just the prologue, but I was delighted to see how Pastor David Flat’s earnest passion for the gospel deeply touched everyone’s heart.
We cannot force the gospel upon anyone, nor can we compel someone to preach it. Only when our hearts are moved and we receive the grace that God offers can true mission take place. In this sense, the book club is one of the best ways to cultivate a missionary spirit. As we had prayed and prepared, God granted a spirit of grace to everyone, and we experienced a beautiful sharing.
It was wonderful to see those who have long shared their faith encouraging one another. I was grateful to observe that, in their individual circumstances, they exceeded my expectations and showed growth even in such a short time. Hearing each person share the journey of their life was a true blessing. It was also a precious opportunity for me, both as a pastor and as a fellow believer, to learn from these spiritual elders.
I believe that in any endeavor, a single step is important. Ministry may be vast and seemingly endless, but even one sincere moment or one deep conversation can touch a believer’s heart and life. Through this journey, the church community grows. Today’s meeting held great significance for me, and I thank God for guiding the church.
Baltimore Church will officially launch the book club in March. In February, we plan to promote it among the congregation and form teams. Today, God graciously opened the door for us to begin. I pray that God will bestow even greater grace upon the Baltimore Church Mission Committee. I bless those who are already serving the church with all their love, and I sincerely pray that these precious individuals’ lives will become even more centered on the gospel, leading to beautiful lives that please God.
