Mustard Seed는 볼티모어 교회의 Children Ministry의 이름입니다. 아주 작은 겨자씨가 자라서 큰 관목이 되는 것처럼, 사랑하는 자녀들이 그렇게 믿음 안에서 자라기를 소망하는 이름입니다. 그리고 김미아 간사님께서 아이들을 돌보시며 부서를 섬기고 계십니다.
볼티모어 교회의 어린이 부서는 현재 EM에 속해 있습니다. 11시 반 EM 예배 때에, 한어권과 영어권 자녀들이 동일한 시간에 예배를 드립니다. 감사하게도 간사님은 한글과 영어의 Bilingual이 가능하시기 때문에, 모든 문화권의 아이들을 탁월하게 돌보고 계십니다.
김미아 간사님께서 부서의 최근 변화에 대해서 알려주셨습니다. Mustard Seed 안에서 본격적인 소그룹 모임을 시작했다는 것입니다. 아이들의 눈 높이에 맞춰서 간단한 나눔 질문을 준비하고, 소그룹 안에서 아이들이 그 질문을 통해 서로 말씀을 나눌 수 있도록 하는 것입니다.
먼저 감사했던 것은, 김미아 간사님이 끊임없이 아이들을 위해서 고민하신다는 점입니다. 제가 옆에서 지켜본 간사님은 마음이 따뜻하고 사랑이 참 많은 분입니다. 교회를 섬기는데 있어서 가장 중요한 것은 사랑입니다. 만약 사랑이 없다면 우리는 모든 섬김의 동력을 잃어버릴 것입니다. 그러나 간사님은 언제나 아이들을 사랑하고, 또 최선의 것을 주기 위해서 많이 애를 쓰시고 계시다는 것이 마음이 뭉클했습니다.
그런 맥락에서, 어린이 소그룹을 시작하신다는 것이 참 좋았습니다. 굉장히 의미가 있고 또 긍정적인 변화입니다. 소그룹의 장점은 서로를 향한 더 진실한 관계를 가질 수 있다는 것입니다. 그리고 각 사람의 특성에 더 맞추어 신앙 교육을 할 수 있다는 것입니다. 그런 점에서 어른들만 소그룹으로 모이는 것이 아니라, 사랑하는 자녀들도 소그룹으로 모여야 합니다. 어린이 부서의 또 한번의 변화를 통해 아이들이 더 좋은 교육적인 환경에서 신앙이 자랄 수 있다는 것에 감사했습니다.
저는 아이들이 교회에서 마음껏 행복했으면 좋겠습니다. 제가 어린 시절 교회에서 천방지축으로 뛰어 다녀도 어른들이 품어주시고 아껴주셨던 것처럼, 그렇게 지금 자라나는 자녀들을 넉넉하게 품어주기 원합니다. 하나님께서 귀한 아이들에게 더 많은 은혜를 주시기를 기도합니다. 소그룹 모임 안에서 나누는 신앙의 대화들 가운데, 아이들의 마음이 풍성해지고 아름답게 자라기를 원합니다. 믿음의 세대가 더 힘있게 자라나고, 또 그들이 세상 속에서 하나님의 영광을 드러내는 아름다운 일들이 지속적으로 일어나기를 기도합니다.

Mustard Seed: The Name of Baltimore Church’s Children’s Ministry Mustard Seed is the name of Baltimore Church’s Children’s Ministry. Just as a tiny mustard seed grows into a large shrub, the name reflects the hope that our beloved children will grow in faith in the same way. In this ministry, Ms. Mia Kim faithfully serves by caring for and guiding the children.
Currently, the Children’s Ministry is part of the EM (English Ministry). During the 11:30 AM EM service, both Korean-speaking and English-speaking children worship together at the same time. Thankfully, Ms. Kim is bilingual in both Korean and English, allowing her to care for children from all cultural backgrounds with excellence.
Ms. Kim recently shared some exciting changes within the ministry. The Mustard Seed ministry has officially launched small group gatherings for the children. Age-appropriate discussion questions are prepared so that children can share and engage with God’s Word within their groups.
One thing I deeply appreciate is Ms. Kim’s unwavering dedication to the children. As I have observed, she is a warm-hearted and loving person. Love is the most essential part of serving in the church. Without love, we lose the driving force behind all service. However, Ms. Kim consistently pours out her love for the children and strives to offer them the best, which deeply moves my heart.
In this context, the start of children’s small groups is a truly wonderful initiative. It is a meaningful and positive change. One of the greatest strengths of small groups is that they allow for deeper, more genuine relationships. Additionally, they enable faith education to be more personalized and tailored to each child’s needs. Just as adults gather in small groups, our beloved children should also have the opportunity to meet and grow together. I am grateful that through this new development in the Children’s Ministry, our children will have a better educational environment to nurture their faith.
I hope that our children will find joy and happiness at church. Just as the adults in my childhood church embraced and cherished me even when I ran around wildly, I want us to do the same for the children growing up in our congregation today. I pray that God will pour out abundant grace upon these precious children. May their hearts be enriched and beautifully nurtured through the faith-filled conversations in their small groups. I also pray that the next generation will grow strong in faith and continue to glorify God in the world, bringing forth beautiful and lasting works for His kingdom.
