처음에 볼티모어교회에서 사역을 시작하면서 모든 것이 분주했습니다. 많은 분들을 만났지만 살필 일들이 많았기 때문에 모든 만남을 충분히 다 기억하기는 쉽지 않았습니다. 그래도 위임식 때에 방문해주신 만나24 박노경 대표님과 잠깐 이야기를 나누면서, 좋은 인상을 받았습니다. 왜냐하면, 어려운 시대 가운데 복음과 교계의 소식을 전하는 미디어의 역할이 참 쉽지 않으실텐데, 웃음으로 열심으로 섬기시는 모습이 너무 보기 좋았기 때문입니다.
얼마전에 박대표님이 연락을 주셨습니다. 인터뷰를 하고 싶다는 뜻을 전해오셨습니다. 이곳에 온지 얼마 되지 않은 저를 인터뷰해주셔서 감사하는 마음이었고 또 어떤 이야기를 나눌까 고민이 되었습니다. 박대표님이 사려깊게 좋은 질문들을 준비해주셔서 참 좋았습니다.
인터뷰 내용은 크게 세가지였습니다. 설교, 목회의 철학, 그리고 교회의 양육과 미래였습니다. 세가지 카테고리 모두 담임인 저에게 있어서 너무나 중요한 주제이고, 또 그런 면에서 이야기를 나눌 수 있어서 감사했습니다.
첫째로, 지적이며 동시에 감성적인 설교를 추구한다는 것을 공개적으로 밝힌 것은 처음인 듯 합니다. 이것은 훌륭한 신학자들과 목회자들의 책을 읽으면서 제가 확립한 두가지 중요한 축입니다.
뜨거움 없이 지적이기만 한 설교는 그 누구의 마음도 변화시킬 수가 없습니다. 자기 자신도 뜨겁지 않은데 들으시는 성도님이 은혜 받기를 원한다면 그것은 논리적인 모순입니다. 반면에 지적이지 못하면서 뜨겁기만 한 설교는 잘못된 방향으로 성도를 이끌 것입니다. 그래서 이 두 가지야 말로, 좋은 설교를 만들어내는 핵심 요소입니다.
또한, 듣기만 해도 지적인 지평이 넓어지는 설교를 추구하는 것도 저의 가장 중요한 설교 철학 중 하나입니다. 설교에 적합한 인용문을 고민하면서 찾고 설교에 통합시키는 것은 매우 고된 일입니다. 그러나 그것을 통해서 성도님들의 복음을 이해하고 말씀을 삶에 적용하는 지평이 넓어질 수 있기 때문에, 그만큼 가치가 있는 일입니다.
둘째로, 경청이야 말로 제가 가장 중시하는 것입니다. 누구를 만나든지 일단 충분히 듣기 위해 노력합니다. 물론 너무 오랫동안 경청을 훈련하다보니, 오히려 제 자신이 대화의 능력을 잃어버린 것은 아닌가 라고 종종 생각합니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 누군가의 이야기를 주의 깊게 듣고, 그 사람의 상황을 이해하고 공감하고 반응하는 것이야 말로 좋은 목회의 핵심이라고 생각하기 때문에 포기하지 않고 경청을 연습합니다.
마지막으로, 북클럽 양육과 교회의 미래에 대한 이야기입니다. 많은 사람들이 교회의 양육이 중요하다고 말합니다. 그리고 밝은 교회의 미래를 꿈꿉니다. 그러나, 막연히 기대하는 것과 그것을 실제로 구현해서 전진하는 것은 전혀 다른 이야기입니다. 지난 3개월 동안 볼티모어교회의 양육이라는 면에서 참 많은 성과가 있었습니다.
함께 섬기는 박동민 목사님, 나현수 목사님, 김미아 간사님, 저의 아내인 이진희 사모, 그리고 구역 리더들이 애를 많이 써 주셨습니다. 이제 시작에 불과하지만, 그러나 이미 큰 걸음을 전진했다고 생각합니다. 인터뷰에서 밝힌 것처럼 크리스천 북클럽을 중심으로, 모든 성도님들이 만족하고 성장할 수 있는 교회 양육의 미래를 제시하기 위해 최선을 다하겠습니다.
저는 담임 목회는, 일종의 세일즈라고 생각합니다. 그것은 복음을 힘써 전한다는 측면에서 그렇습니다. 또한 제가 섬기는 교회를 지역 사회 가운데 적극적으로 알린다는 측면에서 그렇습니다. 부족하지만 제 역할에 최선을 다해 감당할 수 있어서 감사드립니다. 귀한 기회를 주신 박노경 대표님께 감사드리고, 또 함께 섬기신 윤양희 촬영 감독님께 감사드립니다.
When I first started my ministry at Baltimore Church, everything was hectic. I met many people, but it wasn’t easy to remember all the meetings in detail because there were so many things to take care of. However, I had a brief conversation with Park No-Kyung, the representative of Manna24, when she visited during the installation service, and I received a good impression from her. This was because, in such difficult times, the role of media in spreading the gospel and church news is not easy, yet she serves with a joyful and passionate heart, which I found very admirable.
Recently, Representative Park contacted me, expressing her desire to conduct an interview. I was grateful that she wanted to interview me, even though I had only recently arrived here, and I also pondered what topics we would discuss. Fortunately, she had thoughtfully prepared insightful questions, which I greatly appreciated.
The interview focused on three main topics: preaching, the philosophy of ministry, and church education and its future. All three categories are crucial to me as the senior pastor, and I was thankful to have the opportunity to discuss them.
First, I believe this was the first time I publicly stated that I pursue a preaching style that is both intellectual and emotional. This philosophy is based on two fundamental pillars I established through reading books by outstanding theologians and pastors.
A sermon that is purely intellectual without passion cannot change anyone’s heart. If a preacher is not personally moved by their own sermon, yet expects the congregation to receive grace, that is a logical contradiction. On the other hand, a sermon that is only passionate without intellectual depth can mislead the congregation in the wrong direction. That is why these two elements—intellect and passion—are the core components of a good sermon.
Additionally, one of my most important preaching philosophies is to deliver sermons that expand the intellectual horizon of the listeners. Finding appropriate quotes and integrating them into a sermon is a challenging task. However, it is a worthwhile effort because it helps the congregation deepen their understanding of the gospel and apply the Word to their lives more effectively.
Second, I highly value the practice of listening. No matter whom I meet, I make an effort to listen attentively. Sometimes, I even wonder if I have lost my ability to converse because I have trained myself to listen so much. Nevertheless, I continue to practice listening because I believe that carefully hearing someone’s story, understanding their situation, empathizing, and responding is at the core of good pastoral ministry.
Lastly, we discussed church education through the book club and the future of the church. Many people talk about the importance of church education and dream of a bright future for the church. However, simply hoping for it and actually implementing it are two entirely different things. Over the past three months, Baltimore Church has made significant progress in the area of education.
Pastor Park Dong-Min, Pastor Na Hyun-Soo, Minister Kim Mi-Ah, my wife, Jin-Hee Lee, and the small group leaders have all put in great effort. Although this is only the beginning, I believe we have already taken significant steps forward. As I mentioned in the interview, I will do my best to establish a solid foundation for church education through the Christian Book Club, ensuring that all congregation members can grow and be satisfied in their faith.
I consider pastoral ministry to be a form of sales in a sense—both in the aspect of passionately spreading the gospel and in actively introducing the church to the local community. Though I may be lacking, I am grateful to fulfill my role to the best of my ability.
